Project 1.1.6 Compound Machine Design

Brainstorm Idea

When you turn the first wheel and axle, the sprocket and chain and the second wheel and
axle will turn. The string attached to the second wheel and axle will wind the string, making the
lever attached to the string to come down. In result, it will raise the object up.

The string attached to the spool in the larger sprocket will wind when you turn the lever
on the smaller sprocket. As the sprocket turns it will wind the string in the spool and also the
pulley attached to the weight will rise. The fixed pulley on the top enables the string to change its
direction making possible for the weight to lift up as the string is pulled down or wind to the
spool.
Design Proposal
To select the design, our team members agreed to use decision matrix. For the criteria, we
put time the machine takes to lift the object up, complexity, size, ease of operation, and
mechanical advantage. We scored each of our design as a group, giving 5 for the best and 1 for
the worst. Then, we added up the scores and picked the one that had the most score. Therefore,
we concluded to use Ariels idea because it is most effective and met all the criteria.
