CELTIC TARANTELLA For String Quartet ‘The motivation of the writing of this composition, as of for all the EUROPEAN ROMANTIC PIECES for string quartet, comes from two different lines of thought. The idea has been to unite the old and the new Europe. The denomination ‘romantic suggests the respect of the author towards ‘salon music’ ot, to be more exact, towards ‘salon pieces’ of the 19th century, so important in their age (in an era before radio, television and recordings this was then the ‘popular’ music of the day) but unfortunately largely forgotten in today’s world. On the other hand the word ‘European’ is rather representative of the pleasure that Johnstone feels towards the European Union of the 2Ist century, having himself shared his life between England and Spain. ‘Celtic Tarantella’ : In our century the opportunities to journey and work in other countries, in whatever country of the European Union are greater than ever before, which results in an absolute mixture of cultures. In the same way, this musical proposition of Johnstone brings together the ‘Jig’ of the Celtic people from the north of Europe with the Tarantella which is principally found in the southern parts of Italy, all under the influence of the ‘Scherzo’ which was used regularly since Beethoven's time by Germanic composers. The message is really saying “we live in different countries but we live it one Europe’! TARANTELLA CELTA Para Cuarteto de Cuerdas La_motivacion de esta composicion, como todas Ins PIEZAS ROMANTICAS EUROPEAS para cuarteto de cuerdas, viene de dos vertientes diferentes. La idea es unir la vieja y 1a nueva Europa. La denominacién ‘romdnticas’ sugiere el respeto del autor hacia la ‘miisica de sal6n’ o para ser més exacto ‘piezas de sal6n’ del siglo XIX, tan importantes en su dfa (en una época antes de la radio, la television y las grabaciones esta miisica era entonces la misica ‘popular’) pero por desgracia mayoritariamente olvidadas hoy en dia. Por otra parte la palabra ‘europeas’ representa el gusto que Johnstone siente hacia la Union Europea del siglo XXI, habiendo compartido su vida entre Espatia ¢ Inglaterra. “Tarantella Celta’ : En nuestro siglo las oportunidades para viajar y trabajar en el extranjero, en cualquiera de los paises de la Union Europea son mayores que nunea, resultando asf una verdadera mezcla de culturas. AI mismo modo, esta ptoposicién musical de Johnstone retine el ‘Jig’ (Giga) de los pueblos celtas del norte de Europa con la Tarantella encontrado principalmente en la parte sur de Italia, todo bajo la influencia del ‘scherzo’ (utilizado regularmente desde la época de Beethoven por compositores germanicos).
