It has boen ten years and more since enactment of the standard and actual results of the standard has been brought about, so that revisions for the present problems and counter-measures to the future tendency have been taken this time. Mein revisions and additional items were 2s follows (1) Units wore changed according to the introduc ton of the second stage of SI units, (2) The ten tests taken this time were clesified Into three divisions for cleaeness of test pur: Poses. And, the combination tests by the pur ote were made easy to be done, (3) CASS test and SO, test wore omitted because fof the judgement that these tests had little frequency of use and would have litle possibil ity in future as the brake tube test methods. (4) The following tests which had not been stand ardized in the previous prescription were added: ‘zon resistance, liquid resistance, and hot water tests of organic coating on brake tube (5) The impact pressure test was revised for its some deficient points (6) At present the corrasion testing methods for brake tube is under study for the international standerdization by 1S0/TC22/SC2/WGB {herein after referred to as "ISO.WGS"), and the Sacie- ty of Automotive Engineers of Japan also actively deals with those methods in @subcom mittee set up newly. The corrosion testing ‘methods for brake tube have been adopted here in this standard, in advance, from the draft which were under deliberation in 1SO.WGB, The corrosion by the testing method testing ‘methods which have been proposed by Sweden reproduce well the corrosion in market, and hhave good accelerabilty and repeatability (7) In the gravel test and corration test, round Tobin tests were repeated simultaneously and ‘est conditions and operating methods were reconsidered. 1“ (8) For easier usage of this standard, the important items which had been written in the Appendix wore removed into the Text, and the Appendix was eliminated. ‘The aforementioned are the main revisions of this time; however, the international movement is active center: ing aroud ISO in relation with the test methods for deteriolation of organic coating in the first division and for corrosion of the second division; hereafter, the results are necessary to be reflected timely in this, standard Expianations will be given in the following for items ‘that appear to need supplemental descriptions. (The ‘numbers of items are the same with those in the Text) 3. Kinds of Tests ‘As for the kinds of tests, purposes of the tests were made leer as wore written in (1), (2), (2), and (8) of the preface. Individual tests were made to be done singly or in combination, and the road mud test which had been under deliberation at 1SO-WG8 was newly added to the second division. Furthermore, the cyclie ‘corrosion tests such as the cycle humidity test in SAE Standard, which would repeat dipping drying and spray ing, were proposed as an accelerated test method, but Was left ever this time. 4.2, 4.3 Test Piece and Preparation of Test ‘Two kinds of test pieces, the straight tube and rank: shaped tube, were adopted. The straight tube was the same as before, on the other hand, the crank shaped tube was changed to the test piece of ISO-WGB. This type of test piece would be prospective as future com: ‘mon test piece in the world, and wat under prepara tion for the observation of deterioration at bended Portion snd for the evaluation of functions after the corrosion test, so that this type was adopted in this ‘test method, Therefore, the bended test piece of the previous standard was eliminated. And, necessary items for the preparation of test pieces were added. Explana- tory Fig, 1 and 2 shows examples of the bending size fof the crank shaped large diameter tube and the seal ing method for the ends 4 JASO M 104-86, Explanatory Fig, 1 Example of Bending Sizes of 6.35 mm Tube te Explanatory Fig. 2 Example of Tube End Sealing Method “est piece Tope Resin costing _ 45 Observation of Test Items for the observation of test piece was newly estab lished, which should be applied to the first division of ‘he test methods. After the tess of the first division, ‘observation and evaluation in accordance with these items are necessary. Criteria of the evaluation shall be put under the agreement between the persons con ‘cerned on delivery because of the difficulty of judg: ment. 5.1 Gravel Tost (1) As for the methods to evaluate the damages of surface coating by flying gravel, there are sand: falling abration resistance test specified in JIS H 8601 (Anodic Oxidation Coatings on Alumin- Jum Alloys), sandjat test, and drop test using steel balls or nuts. However, fying gravel test for brake tube may be simulated under the reorest conditions ta the actual situations by SAE J 400 (Test for Chip Resistance of Surface Costing): therefore, this tost was drafted pur suant to the standard (2) Although only straight tube test piece hed been specified in the old standard, the crank shaped test piece was newly added because of the judgement that the evaluation of the damages fon the bending R portion was also necessary. (3) The use of nov specified gravel may result in large dispersion of test results because of the differences of kinds, farms, hardness, etc. by the places where the gravel is gathered. There ‘ore, the stones praseribod in JIS A 8001 (Crash « {ed Stone for Road Construction) were examined {or unification of gravel; however, those stones ‘with considerably wide range were judged not always adequate to be adopted for flying gravel test, However, further examinations on Kinds, shapes, etc. of stones and the sulection of the gravel which well matches to the actual situs tion will be necessary ‘And, it must be @ method that the use of an abrasive artificial stone with constant kind, magnitude, shape, etc. under the agreement between the persons concerned on delivery makes the dispersion of test results as little 2s possible for contrivance of good method. Hitherto, projecting air pressure was 0.540.038, MPa (520.3 kgtiem?) and was difficult to be kept continuously in some laboratories; there fore, both 0.240.02 MPa (240.2 kgi/om?) and 0410.03 MPa (410.3 kgf/om*} were written 0 that either of them might be selected suitab ly. Further, the fitting method of crank shaped test piece changed its attitude to be set with the forward inclination of 20° to the vertical ling and to be projected from the direction of 70° 0 that the gravel might hit the apex of bending R portion of the test piece. 16 JASO M 104-86 5.2 Heat Cycle Test Hitherto the time to be kept at room temperature after high temperature test wat 2 hours; however, even the brake tube costed with heat shrinking tube would each to room temperature in about 10 minutes from 120°C; therefore, the time was chenged to 0.5 hour in consideration of work efficiency: And the high: ‘temperature side was made to be suitably selectable 2s before between both 8022°C and 120:2°C which were written in parallel 5.3 Hot Water Test ‘This test was added, because some abnormalities such a blisters by water absorption, ete. would happen at the organic coating applied on outer surface of the brake tube for improvement of corrosion resistance ability according to the kinds of the organic coating, 5.4 Liquid Resistance Test ‘This test was added for evaluation of brake fluid resst- ance ability of the organic coating, etc. Test of fuel resistence was also added, because the brake tube would be frequently arranged side by side with fuel tube and be apt to be wet with fuel at maintenance and: parts changing 5.5 Ozon Resistance Test The organic coating is widely used for protection of brake tube from corrosion and damages due to fiying stone, but its 02on resisting property as a characteristic ‘of organic material is apt to be over looked. Then, ‘zone resistance test was put into the Text of the stand ard this time for convenient selection of new mate iol. In previous standard it was specified as reference 5.6 Neutral Salt Spray Tost (1) Being corresponded with the name of “neutral salt spray test” used in ISO, the name of this test was changed to “neutral salt spray test.” (2) Test conditions were decided in consideration fof the consistency with 180 and JIS. (3) As for the sprayer, the spraying tower system Which has been adopted in ISO standard an! in all Europeo-American countries is desirable 35. standard. In nozzle system, the spray is direc tional with impossible feee fall, and accom panied by large transverse dispersion; therefore, the spraying tower system is bette 16 (4) As for the calibration of test device, a method 0 use steel plate a6 standard plate is under elibration in ISO/TC 156. This method uses the steel plate of 80 x 60 x 1,0 mm in size of 180 3574 CRA (corresponding to JIS SPCE-SD) 28 a standard plate and regulates the weight loss Of the standard plate after 96 hours of neutral salt spraying to 130220 g/m. {Only one side of the standard plate may be exposed an d the other side shall be sealed.) As the results of the actual trials, although some exceeded, all plates could fit the standard by regulation of spraying quantity, This may be fan effective method to make the dispersion of ‘quantities of corrosion among. laboratories. (Accumulation of dats at every laboratory is desirable by all means for improvement of roliability of the neutral salt spray test which has been utilized most in our country.) Although the fitting engle of test piece had been specified t0 15 ~ 30° previously, 20° was adopted this time because of following reasons; around 20° was the angle which showed the largest corrosion quantity, and the allowable width added to the fitting angle enlarged the dispersion of the corrosion quantities as shown in Explanatory Fig. 3, and ISOWGE decided adoption of 20°, This test shall be continuous, a5 9 rule, and its interruption is allowable only when the con- tinuation is impossible because of long term holidays, stoppege of electric power, etc., but itis not desirable Although the test time is specified to be set Under the agreement between the persons con- ‘cerned on delivery, 1000 ~ 3000 hours may be adequate, boing referred to the results in mar. ket and of tests hold for the sake of this rev sion. And, two items, visual observation and static bursting strength, were adopted for evaluation of test results, because the possibi ity of breakage might be extrapolated from the Drogress of visible rust during the test, and the functions required for real tube should be con: firmed by the static bursting tes. White and red rusts have no relation with the fundamental function required to the brake tube; however, the corrosion resistance of brake ‘ube in market is sometimes evaluated in ac- cordance with them at the automobile inspec tion stations in Europe, in technical magazines, and so on;" therefore, the occurring time of white or red rust has been added to the items for evaluation at this time 65 a countermeasure 10 such a situation 6) a JASO M 104-86 Explanatory Fig. 3 Example of Relation betweenCorroded us 140: 120. (1) The test vessel (b) shall be covered with poly ethylene sheet which is permeated with oxygen (5) The time was referred to the one specified by Iso.wes. (6) Confirmation of progress of the cust is impos sible during the test because of the buried test place in the mud, so thatthe test shall be finish fed at the specified time and the progress of the rust shall be evaluated by the static bursting test but without moisture so that the moisture in 5.8 Bending Fatigue Test the mud may be as constant a5 possible, ‘because the moisture quantity in the mud affects the precision to a great extent. The measurement method of moisture is written for reference, {a) Take measure of the weighing bottle clen- fed in advance. (Ag) (b) Put the tested mud of about 10 g in the weighing bottle and measure its weight. (ag) (6) Dry the mud for an hour in a constant tem: perature bath at 110°C and weigh the ‘weighing bottle with the mud after cooling (1) Terms, such as names of tests, ete., ware made to coincide with terms in JIS Z 2273 (General Rules for Fatigue Testing of Metals), Z 2274 (Method of Rotating Bending Fatigue Testing ‘of Metals), and Z 2275 (Method of Plane Bend ing Fatigue Testing of Mota Plates). (2) Repeating speed should be the same condition ‘8 above said JIS standard, 1000 ~ 5000 times/ ‘min, because its expression was vague. (4) The test shall be done with a constant tempers ture bath by means of hot air heating. (1) Untit now nonspecitied shape of the test piece ‘was specified as exank shape type. (2) Formerly, the rated pressure was specified that it should be pursuant to the pressure resisting value preseribed in JASO M 101. Under this condition the stress at the inner surface of the ‘tube would rise above the yield point of the ‘material at its peak prossure; therefore the rated pressure was judged not to be suitable for the condition of repeated test, so that the formula of hydraulic test which was widely used in JIS. G 3455 (Carbon Steel Pipes for High Pressure Piping), ete. was adopted and specified as the W JASO M 104-86 @ “a 6 “base pressure. According to this formula, the stress at the inner surface of the tube would indicate 2 value of stress lower than the yield Point oF proof stress irelevantly to the tube material even at the peak pressure, Even then, the stress would ordinarily surpass the fatigue limit stress of the material, therefore the con: dition should be understood to be for com parison ‘The frequency was specified as 35 ~ 75 cycle/ ‘min conformably to JIS B 2351 (210 kgt/om? Bite Type Tube Fittings for Hydraulic Us). “Test liquid was specified to be pursuant to JIS K 2233 (Non-Petroleum Base Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids), ete, which liquid would not cor rode the inner surface of the tube, in considers tion of the abolition of JIS K 2232 (Air Craft Hydraulic Oil, Petroleum Base) and the fact that the object of this test was the brake tube. The pressure wave form inclusive of its allow: able range was clearly specified over again, because it had been partially difficult to be understood, 5.10 Static Bursting Strength Test ‘The pressurizing speed wat clearly specified to 10~20 IMPa per 10 sec, because of its vague expression. 18 JASO M 104.86 Inthe event of any doubt, the original standards in Japanese should be referred |S): SECOND PHASED STANDARD (The standard where customary units end converted values are given in brackets after specified values of SI units.) It has boen ten years and more since enactment of the standard and actual results of the standard has been brought about, so that revisions for the present problems and counter-measures to the future tendency have been taken this time. (3) The method by air pressure, being in use, was ‘added as an abnormality confirming method. (ea) 5.9 Impact Pressure Tost (ab) (aA) x 100 = W/(%6) (2) Sand in the mud shall be quartziferous without salt and other water soluble materials, boing not specified in particular, For reference, the subcommittee used the sand or sandblast at the test (2) The size of vessel (A) shall be decided, depend: ing on the drawing. Being not specified in particular for the vessel (B), the size shall be decided +0 that the moisture in the sump mud will not be affacted. 18 JASO M 104.86 Inthe event of any doubt, the original standards in Japanese should be referred |S): SECOND PHASED STANDARD (The standard where customary units end converted values are given in brackets after specified values of SI units.) (Item numbers is the same as of the Text.) 1. Scope Because the pressure resistibility has been newly specified, the explanation for SI and customary unit have been added to Remarks. 2. Purpose Aims of standards have been changed into rationalization of manufacturing and assuring an appropriate quality from standardization and assuring an appropriate quality. 3. Classification Respecting to JASO Z 202 (Glossary of Terms Relating to Pipe Fittings of Automobiles), the tube fittings are divided into three classi tions depending on the connecting method. 4, Nomenclature and Notation for Tube Fittings Abolishing JASO F 406, flared type multi-way connectors for brakes have been included in this standard. Therefore, four classes of three- way fittings and three classes of four-way fit- tings have been added. Furthermore, BS1 type three-way fittings and BS1 type four-way fittings have been abolished, because there have been no actual results. And also, O-ring flared type tube fittings have been newly added to this standard, because the use ‘of power-steeringhas been increasing recently. 6. Material Based upon the investigation results from the actual usage of eachcompany, the standard has, been looked over again, and added the changes resulted from the revision of the related JIS standards. Major revised items are as follows. (1) SSd1 is only shown, asthe materials, due to the actual results and designation of uis. (2) For the carbon steel for mechanical and structural use, threeclasses such asS10C, S12C, andS15C have been specified, from the view point of consideration for the materials used with a lot of quantity. However, regarding to Flared Type Nut B, S4BC has been added as before with the note, because of the necessity of ensur- ance of the strength depending upon the shape. (3) For the steel wire, SWCH and SWRCH have been commonly used. In this standard, two classes of SWCH10R and SWCH12R are selected, because SWCHis necessary in order to ensure the accuracy of the parts from the view point of scat- tering of the wire diameter. (4) For free-cutting steel, two classes of SUM21 and SUM22 have been selected due to the actual results. 7. Shape, Dimensions and Geometrical Tolerance For the eccentricity between the fitting seat surface and screw thread which is important to ensure liquid tightness, “deviation” spe 1SO 4038 has been applied. More concrete definition for the eccentricity has been specified in each Attached Table. Furthermore, illustrations of surface roughness have been shown as Ra marking, following ISO. 8. Appearance Adding to the requirements only against the surface defects, the requirements for interior cleanliness of the parts have been specified in view of the protection from inclusion of alien substances. 21 JASO F 402-90 9. Surface Treatment Considering the recent actual results, MFZn8-C and the zinc clomate coating surface treatment and also anode oxidation coating have been added. And also, the coating mass has been specified in the requirement for zinc clomate coat'ng as usually specified. Anode oxidation coaung is specified in JIS H 8601, but at this time it is difficult to specify more concretely due to lack of the data, therefore it is subject to an agree- ment between the parties concerned. Also, the caution has been described in re- marks, thatitis necessary to take care when the zine clomate coating surface treatment is ap- plied, because this coating method has been subject to an industrial property. As pin holes are easily produced when zinc clomate coating is applied, itis desirable not to se this method for the oil pressure brake sys- tems. 10. Classification of Screw Thread and Its Accuracy In case of zinc clomate coating surface treat- ment, it will be difficult to keep the specified accuracy after surface treatment due to “accu- mulating” in grooves of the thread, therefore, the requirements shall not be applied. 11. Pressure Resistibility Regarding to the pressure resistibility for flared type tube fittings, the values have been same as those specified in published JASO F 406. Re- garding to the values for newly specified O-ring flared type tube fittings, the values have been decided from the data mainly used inthe power, steering manufacturing companies, consider- ing safety allowance. 12. Inspection ‘The methods of inspection have been clearly described for each inspection item. 13. Designation ‘The examples of designation have been revised into easily understanding forms like the exam- ples described in the recent standards. Others (1) Tightening torque The tightening torque for newly specified O-ring flared type tube fittings has been added. Furthermore, considering that the values ofSlaretobeas reference, and movingto the third step, the values have been rounded into an integral number. (Refer to Explanatory Table 1) (2) Electrolytic corrosion Because it is very important reference item, it is remained unchanged, basing upon the explanation up to the present, after looking over again a part of expres- sion.
