Objectives

Studetns can comprehend and understand the Scarlett Ibis
Students can conclude how literary elements adds more meaning to the Scarlet Ibis.
Essential Question
How are literary elements used to add more significance to a text?
*Note* There is a head teacher and two PDS student teachers.
Teaching: Activities (***see note below)
The class of 30 was split up into 3 groups of 10. We did a form of parallel teaching where
we separated the groups, but taught the same lesson.
Students will summarize what happened in the text
Any unanswered questions will be answered
After the groups are split up we will comprehend and understand literary terms and the
text.
Students are paired up and are each given 1 or 2 literary terms to define (from two
different sources) and to create in their own definition of it.
1. Foreshadowing and significant diction
2. Symbolism
3. Themes and 1st person point of view.
4. Repetition and extended metaphors
After students have found their definitions, they will write it up on the board so that they
can copy it in their notes.
The second part of the class is discussion on these different literary terms and discussinog
where do we find it in the text.

How does significant deviance, metaphors and themes foreshadow?


What does these literary elements add to the text
o Significant diction:
Lies (diction)
(What does Doodles lies say about him and his
wants? Can we connect his lie to another part of
the text?)
Names (diction)

(What is the importance of names? How do they


foreshadow Doodles life? Neil Armstrong, The
doodlebug and how it moves backward does the
mean Doddle cant move forward, no future)? Why
the other brother is not named, how is this
significant?
Aunt Niceys superstitions:
How does her use of words impact reactions of the
reader and the text. What does it say about
Doodle? (Jesus, saint, death).
Metaphor
Description of the bird
Why is Doodle so fascinated with it? How can we
connect the two? Can we connect the injuries of the
bird with his disability?
Themes:

How does nature predict the tone of the story?
What other role does nature play in the story?

What forms of beauty are presented in the story?
Why do you think Doodle is so fascinated with
beauty?
Definitions of Pride and Love:
What is the Brothers definition of pride? Do you
agree? What is your own definition of pride?
How does The Brother describe lov

How is hope viewed? How does the hope of the
Brother lead to Doodles improvement and the
positive family thoughts?
Loneliness:
Why doesnt Doodle want to ever be alone? Did he
die feeling this fear of loneliness?
Fitting in:
What is being normal?
