Dear Professor Arrieta:
The reason for my email is to report my observations about the discourse community I had
recently visited, the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez (UACJ), or to be more specific the
Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Administrativas (ICSA). This is one of the four institutes the
university possesses, and it is also divided into four other departments: administrative sciences,
social sciences, humanities, and juridical sciences.
The purpose of this institute is to help its students achieve a degree, in any of the departments
already mentioned, in order to prepare them for the outside world. Also it helps them get a job as
soon as possible after they graduated. This institution also allows the students to expand their
cultural knowledge with the international programs it offers and different languages the school
teaches. The university provides scholarships so people of low incomes that want to attend the
school can do it and get a degree to have achieve a better quality of life. Each department has its
own vocabulary according to the major, but they all use Spanish because it is a Mexican college.
To belong to this university an exam is needed in order to diminish the amount of people
accepted, and also tuition needs to be paid. Like any other university it has activities and festivals
to give the students a better college experience. Some student organizations also offer trips to
different parts of the country to explore the diversity of culture, tradition, and nature Mexico has.
This institution is important to the community of Ciudad Juarez because it provides the
population with a high quality education that is accessible to young adults near this zone. By
having the chance to transcend themselves, students get motivated and start working harder to
achieve their life goals or to set new ones; this gives them a reason to keep studying and not get
involved in illegal activities. It is also important because the university offers extracurricular
classes that promotes cultural and sport activities among the children in order to create healthy
minds for the future. The UACJ is a very important organism in the fight against criminal
activities. With more people getting a good education the society has more chances of ending
violence and corruption in order to create a better future.
