1.) Communities of Practice- A group of people that work with one another to
achieve a goal that will benefit the community. For example; a tribe of people work
together to provide food and shelter for one another due to survival. The goal of this tribe
is for survival for not one person, but for a community. There is a big difference between
a community and a community of practice. For example; a neighborhood is not a
community of survival because there is not an obvious goal that a neighborhood reaches
to benefit their community. There is also three aspects that determine a community of
practice which would be domain, the community and the practice. The domain in a
community of practice is not a group of friends, but a group of people that share a
common interest and/or goal. The community in the community of practice have to
engaged in activities that help each other. The practice is the sharing of stories, tools,
traditions and wisdom with one another in the community.
2.) Domain- A distinguishing factor in the communities of practice. Its knowledge
that is acknowledge by a group of people and that its shared. The main purpose of a
domain is that people in the group have to learn from one another. An example that was
presented in Communities of Practice: A Brief Introduction is a youth gang in a tough
neighborhood. This gang had to learn from one another to deal with their domain of
survival. How they learn from one another is by learning tools and wisdom from one
another to survive the streets that they live. The domain is the ideal of what the
community wants.
3.) Practices of Community- A distinguishing factor in the communities of practice.
Not a community of interest like sharing a common interest for a clothing brand or a type
of food. Practice of community deals with traditions like sharing stories, tools,
experiences and just they way of life. The practices are necessary to achieve the common
goal of the community of practice. Sometimes our practice of community happens
unknowingly. The example that was used in Communities of Practice: A Brief
Introduction was nurses talking to each other during their break. Theyre sharing
information with one another by how they deal with their patient (domain: survival of the
patient). Overall, practices of community just deals with the how to address the idea or
the common goal that is shared with the community.
