P.O.

W 7

Understanding the Problem
In the 7th P.O.W of the year Aliza assigned a problem that forced us to use more logic and less
raw math. We were given 10 cards, ace through 10, and had to figure out how to flip them over
in order. The catch was that after you placed down the ace, you had to put the next top card on
the bottom and then place the exposed card down on the table and repeat this until the last card.
Process
We think the answer is A,6,2,10,3,7,4,9,5,8. We started by putting the ace in on the top with 6
right after it. The cards would count up one by one every other card that was flipped and every
card that was put on the bottom of the deck would be in numerical order as well. The first order
we tried was A,6,2,7,3,8,4,9,5,10. This didnt work because the outcome was
A,2,3,4,5,6,8,10,9,7. We then tried to fix this by switching the 7 and the eight and the result was
the same except the 7 was in the right place. The next order we tried was A,6,2,8,3,7,4,9,5,10 and
came out with A,2,3,4,5,6,7,10,9,8. We then just switched the 10 and the 8 in the initial sequence
and finally came up with the right answer.
Solution
The solution for this P.O.W is A,6,2,10,3,7,4,9,5,8.
Justification
This answer corresponds to our prediction that A,6,2,10,3,7,4,9,5,8 will put the cards in
numerical order after the procedure. We went through several stages of refinement with our
initial sequence but after 3 times we solved it. We know this answer is correct because we put it
through the procedure twice to double check and it came out correct both times.
