BUSINESS: ENTREPRENURSHIP
The field I am pursuing is business of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneur are in
charge and organize a business. They take financial risk, marketing, take care of
products, and employment of others. I have always been interested in
entrepreneurship. There is something about doing things yourself that is exciting
and taking risks motivated me. If the business fails its on the owner, but so are the
advancements and accomplishments. Business owners dont only require one skill,
but multiple skills. Some of the skill or traits needed are, financing, marketing, great
communication skills, and managing employees. There are28 Million small
businesses in America which account for 55% of employment. This statistics shows
that entrepreneurship is a very competitive field. Entrepreneurs need to have an
overwhelming dedication and entrepreneurial spirit and also find a way to stay on
top. Reading and writing is important in this field for many reasons. The process of
thinking, researching, and writing helps strength and organize your thoughts. Doing
this will allow the audience to think critically. Critical thinking is a characteristic all
entrepreneurs need to run a successful business and are improved with writing and
reading. There are some areas in this field that require more reading and writing
than others. Almost all entrepreneurs are required to implement a website to their
business, they are advice to use the content marketing strategy, which involved a
lot of writing skills. This is a strategy which helps entrepreneurs provide clear
content about their business. It is mostly to inform, attract and show customers the
value of the business with the objective to increase profit. Being an active writer
and in charge of the website will allow you to understand your brand and customers
more, which will lead to success. Overall entrepreneurship requires reading and
writing to excel with their business.

Carter, CJ. "Pros and Cons of Owning a Business." Hostway. Hostway.com.18

December 2014. web. 25 November 2015

Hostway is a blogging website where I found my unreliable source named,

The pros and cons of owning a business by CJ Carter. Carter breaks down the
article into two sections: Pros and Cons. In each sections it then displays simple
words that are defined by the author. Carter then places the words that would be
considered negative or positive for owning a business. He uses words like windfall,
interest and long term in the pros section, and learning, investments and devotion
in the cons section. He then explains why these specific words are the struggles and
accomplishments of most entrepreneur. At the end of the article Carter gives some
types about how to manage a home business.

The author of this piece is CJ Carter and after looking him up to find reasons
for him to be credible, I found nothing. Carter is a blogger and doesnt seem to have
the qualification to write this article. The article is short and poorly written. The
website of this article allows anyone to be a guest blogger, which is not something a
credible source would do. The source is called Hostway and it presents articles
about technology and Business. There are article that seem credible in this website,
but the article I chose was unreliable. The audience of course is public because the
source doesnt show any credibility or anything a professional would want to read,
and it can also be found online. There was no evidence or fact in this article which
just makes it even less credible. The appeals this article show I would say are none
of them. It is an uninteresting, short, and poorly written article. It looks like the
author was forced to do it but was in a hurry to do so. It is organized but really the
way he defines the words are effortless. For example he used the word security
for one of the pros, and defined it simply as, you cant be fired. The way this
article was written affects my understanding of appeals because it does not show
any of them.
After evaluating this piece, I dont think I learned much than I already knew.
It does not add to my research or skills to know for my desired career. This article is
unprofessional and poorly done. It is a great example of an unreliable source

Elise, Ana. Personal Interview. November 26 2015.

Ana Elise is the owner of El Chihuahua, a Mexican restaurant that has been
around for almost 40 year. They offer authentic, fresh Mexican dishes that
originated from her hometown of Chihuahua. Her father Miguel Quinonez had a
dream of owning a restaurant in America and in 1978 his wish came true. Miguel
was self-taught in the restaurant business and only had a third grade education. Ana
has been around the restaurant business her whole life and after her father passing
away, she took charge of the business. Ana herself only received a high school
diploma and explains that she learned everything from her father. Learning through
experience is also very important and helpful she states. Just like in the many
article I read for this project, Ana thinks that having goals, working hard, and having
a great relationship with her employees are some of things that have helped their
business succeed. Putting your customers first and providing them with good quality
products is also an element for a successful business.
The author is Uriel Corrales a first year student at SLCC, whose career goals
are to become an entrepreneur. He interviews Ana Elise who has been the owner of
El Chihuahua Mexican restaurant for almost 10 years. She is a credible interviewee
because she had been around the restaurant business her whole life. The audience
can be anyone who like to go into the restaurant business and would like to know
the ins and outs of it all. The reason for this interview is to educate myself and other
about the challenges a business owner has to go through, but also have good
advice from a credible source. The interview displays Ethos because Mrs. Elise is a
credible source and is in the field I would like to go into. She also gives facts about

the pros and cons of owning a business. She has and is experiencing the challenges
of owning a business.
This interview affected me positively because I learned many things about
entrepreneur from a current entrepreneur. Now I know that to succeed in the
restaurant business people have to be really dedicated and motivated. The
entrepreneur has to work long hours, have great relationships with workers, take
risks, market, and network correctly. I now have a better understanding of what I
have to do to start a business.

Kramer, Kraig. "CEO Tools Action Items 1." Vistage. Vistage.com 27 Oct. 2014. Web.
27 Nov.
2015.
In this article the author states 7 steps to manage a business correctly. The
steps range from setting goals, to building trust and communication, and even
celebrating with your employees when achievements are completed. Setting goals
and having a plan lets the entrepreneur remind himself what he has to do to reach
success. Not only is the boss pushed to set goals but also their workers. Having
employees on top of their mission will benefit the company even more. Since
workers are most companies priority, having a good relationship with them and
connections with them will only make them enjoy their job more, but their work will
be done better. Most of the article speaks about having a close relation with the
employees. Be their leader and coach them to be winner. So this means you have
to spend a lot of time with them and mentor your workers to be motivated and
dedicated. Kramer also displays business terminology like Setting a reachable
budget (RbR), walking the four corners (W4C), and setting even bigger goals
(BAG).
Kraig Kramer is an 8 time CEO of diverse companies and is also a nationally
known business speaker. The article was published on the website Vistage which
has been around since 1957, with 18,000 entrepreneurs as members. On Vistage,
entrepreneurs share ideas, mentors and networking strategies. From all the
business terminology in this article, I think the targeted audience is other
professionals and entrepreneurs. The genre is professional I would say. It is
educational but also uses terminology that only entrepreneurs would understand.
There isnt much evidence stated, but Kraig Kramer has been a CEO his entire life
makes him credible to write this article.
When it comes down to the rhetorical appeal I believe this article displays
pathos. A big amount of the article speaks about how it is important for the
business owner to have a great relationship with his/her employees. From setting
goals together, building a friendship, and celebrating the success with the
employees. Because of these reasons the article displays emotional, personal and
shared values between the employer and employees.

Since reading this article, my way of thinking changed in more than one area.
Ive came to realize that having a positive relationship with your employees is more
important than I ever thought. Several credible sources that I came across stated
that workers come first and then the customers. Simply because if the employees
are happy, the companys overall results will be better. This helps me avoid the
mistake of having a poor relationship with my coworkers.

Mourdoukoutas, Panos. "The First Rule of Building a Business."Forbes.

Forbes.com, 23 Oct. 2011. Web. 25 Nov. 2015.

In the article The First Rule of Building a Business, Mourdoukoutas explains

that there are certain characteristics that are needed to become a successful
business owner. He states that entrepreneurs have to have a vision, and goals with
set ideas that puts the consumers first. Also have great relations and have a set of
core values that with help everyone around you. Such values to bring success to
your business are economic freedom, wisdom, courage, risk. Innovative, self-control,
fairness, ingenuity, creativity, friendship. There are the values entrepreneurs need
to make their successful business dream a reality, according to Mourdoukoutas.
Business owners need to focus their business around the consumers, meet their
needs and wants. Follow trends, fads, and take advantage of the time. They have to
see a problems with society and find a solution with their business.
Panos Mourdoukoutas is a journalist and a Professor and Chair of the
Department of Economics at LIU. He is very well educated on the subject of
business owning and entrepreneurship. He has published several books including
Collective Entrepreneurship, Business Strategy in a Semiglobal Economy, and many
more. His article was published on Forbes, but he has also published for The New
York Times. This source is mostly for the public since it is published on Forbes, and
also because he is explaining what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. The
genre is an online business article and it is targeted to the public to show how
Americans can have a successful business if they follow some simple values. There
isnt any data or evidence shown in this article, since he is already a professional it
is a trusted source. The article displays the rhetorical appeal of Pathos. The author
explains in most of the article the values entrepreneurs need to become successful.
Also speaks about how business owners cant be selfish and greedy, but instead be
fair, kind and care about people around you. Mourdoukoutas does also show
emotion in this article when he explains that being successful means much more
than just the amount of income entrepreneurs revenue, but to care and share with
others.
This article did affect me positively. Simply because I had a view that
displayed negative values. That we dont need to care about the costumer and just
care about yourself and family. That entrepreneurs have to be heartless and greedy,
but that is not the case. If entrepreneurs center their business on the consumer and
display positive values, business owners can also be successful.

Pollack, Jeffrey M., Jeni L. Burnette, and Crystal L. Hoyt. "Self-Efficacy In The Face Of
Threats To
Entrepreneurial Success: Mind-Sets Matter." Basic & Applied Social
Psychology 34.3 (2012): 287294. Academic Search Premier. Web. 12 Dec. 2015.
In this article two studies where done. They test the results of entrepreneurs
that think their abilities are influenced vs. entrepreneurial ability is fixed. The first
study was done with two women that were told to use the two different theories.
First women used the Incremental theory and showed improvements in her ability to
succeed. The second womens conditions were negative since she was told that
success in business come only from male traits. In the second study, a sample of
small business owners (both men and women) were given the same theories to use.
Questions were asked to all entrepreneurs to test their mindset and behaviors
towards their businesses.
For this academic journal there were three authors, two of which are
professors of psychology and the other a professor of business. They are very
qualified to do these studies. This journal was published on a database called
EBSCO. This data base is very well known by many colleges and is used by
students, professors, and researchers. That means that the audience for this article
is limited to researchers, professors, students, and psychiatrist. The genre of this
piece is academic and can only be accessed by certain people. The authors did a
study of mindset in business owners. They use mathematical equation, they showed
graphs, and evidence. This academic journal definitely displays Logos because of all
the statistics, graphs, facts, and evidence. This affected me because I could not
understand a lot of what they were saying, but from the things I did understand
they were very useful.
From the article I learned that mindset is very important to owning a
business. People have to be comfortable in their ability to success but also fail not
give up. Having a negative mindset will only give negative results. I find this very
useful because I dont want to make the same mistakes many of these
entrepreneurs made.
In conclusion, after doing all this research I learned that it takes a lot more to
be an entrepreneur than I thought. There will be constant sleepless night, there has
to be a big amount of passion, dedication, and risk taking. Also having a great
relationship with employees is important for the companys overall success. If the
employees are happy they will have a great attitude towards customers, which
creates happy customers and then leads to profit. The entrepreneur has to have a
unique spirit that most dont ever acquire. Having goals along the way will let the
entrepreneur not forget why they are doing this and continue with their dream.
Owning a business will be no simple task, it will be hard but if the entrepreneur
invests his all into his business, the result will be sweeter than anything else.
