Philosophy
I believe that there is not enough time in a 50-minute band and choir
period to prepare for each concert cycle for every student. Students need
to work outside the class time to become more proficient on their
specific instrument, working on scales, fingerings, tricky passages in
the music, and just running songs outside of the classroom. I believe
that students should be accountable for two hours of practice outside of
the classroom a week. The two hours can effectively be split up to 20
minutes 6 days a week, or 30 minutes 4 days a week. Doing 2 hours all
on one day will not help you grow as a musician and prepare you for
class.
Action Plan
I will not collect Practice Journals, as these do not help myself and
students understand exactly what they need to work on each week.
Instead, we will be using Google Voice. Google Voice assignments will
count as 10% of students overall grade.
Google Voice is a call-in system where students can use any phone and
call in to an answering machine to record themselves playing.
Guidelines
Students will only have one Google Voice assignment per week; it
will be posted on the White Board under the class schedule on
Monday for the week.
Students have until the following Sunday at 10pm to call in their
assignment
NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. If it is not in on time, it
will be a zero for that week.
Students may only call in once a week; I will grade and hand back
a rubric and students can re-do them as many times during the
quarter as they would like, as long as they got the first one in on
time. I will give students a final due date each quarter when all
re-do assignments must be done by.
