Donatello: A story
Donatello was born in 1386. He was born in Florence, Italy. Donatellos real name was
actually Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi. He got this name because his friends started calling
him that. His fathers name was Niccolo di Betto Bardi, he was a part of the Florentine Wool
Combers Guild. Donatello was homeschooled in the home of the Martellis. He was also a part of
the Florentine Wool Combers Guild. He went to Rome to study classical art. Rome and Italy
were the only known places that Donatello traveled to in his life. He passed away on December
12, 1466 in Florence, Italy.
Donatello became interested in art when he became a member of the Florentine Wool
Combers Guild. He started his art career by creating doors for cathedrals. He helped Ghiberti
create Cathedral doors. He had some insight when he started creating art, so he wasnt
completely clueless. He was a part of the Italian Renaissance which lasted from 1330 to 1550.
After his work for Cathedrals, he began to work with materials such as marble and bronze. He
began to focus on people and animals. He ended up being a very prominent artist for the time.
Donatello was a very famous and unique artist in his time because the pieces that he was
creating were hyper-realistic and he added his own personal flair to his creations making them
truly one of a kind. A contribution that Donatello blessed the world of art with was the shallow

relief technique, better known as schiacciato. Schiacciato is where you try to produce a ThreeDimensional effect on a flat surface. This made his works look as if they had a lot of volume,
while it was actually created on a very shallow plane. Donatello created this art form in the early
1400s and artists like Filippo Brunelleschi used this art style. All in all, Donatello had a very
interesting life, and he shared his gift with the world and left his mark on this planet for
generations to come.
