TheRRJassignmentsgreatlyaffectedhowIthoughtaboutthebookasIreadit.WHenI
firstbeganreading,beforeeventhefirstRRJ,Iwasboredbythenovel,anddidntreally
considermuchabouthowsignificantthestoriesofthosestudentswere.However,astimewent
on,andIcompletedtheRRJsIbegantothinkmoredeeplyandcriticallyoftheissuesthatwere
indirectlybroughtupinthebook,suchasbullyinginthecaseofLorenzo,ordiscriminationinthe
caseofOscar,orreallyanyofthem.Asthebookprogressed,Irealizedhowthisbookwas
actuallygood,andquiterelevanttomylifenow,andhowmuchItakethingsforgranted,like
thiscollegeeducationIampursuing,whenthey,whoclearlyhadsucceededonamuchgreater
levelthanIhadinhighschool,struggledtogetacceptedbythiscountry,letalonebyanyschool
withinit.Asaresult,thismademereconsiderhowseriouslyIshouldtakemyschoolwork,and
encouragedmetoactuallytrytosucceed.

Myreadingduringcollegehaschangedquiteabit.Inowwillactivelyreadpassagesin
booksmultipletimessoastobetterunderstandthematerial,andIanalyzethesereadingsmore
critically,askingmyselfhowthetopicrelatestomyself,ortheworldIlivein,orhowitshowsthe
worldotherslivein.Thisallowsmetobetterunderstandthemajorissuesintheworld,andhow
theyareconnectedinmanywaystoeachother.Adifficultreadingformewasapassageinmy
englishbookbyFrederickDouglass.Hiswritingwasextremelyesotericandobscure,soitwas
difficultformetoextracthispointfromit,soastowriteaboutit.Tobetteranalyzeand
understandit,Ireaditmultipletimes,highlightedpassagesthatseemedimportant,anduseda
dictionaryprodigiouslytounderstandsomeofthevocabularyheused.Intheend,IfeelthatI
haveaverystrongunderstandingofhiswriting,andthekeyissueshetalksaboutinit.
