Class/Period: 5
Date: Week 9/12 9/16

Essential Question: How can we investigate the structure and function of biomolecules and the role they play in
life.
Questions:
Surface Tension
What creates a
Hydrogen Bond?
Biochemistry
Polarity
Cohesion
What is an example
of Cohesion?
Adhesion
What is an example
of Adhesion?
Solvent

Notes:
- Produced by the force of attraction between water
molecules.
- Anything bonding with hydrogen creates a hydrogen
bond.
-

The chemistry of living things.

Chemistry that deals with chemical compounds and
processes occurring in organisms.
Describes how equally bonding electrons are shared between
atoms.
Hydrogen bonds between molecules of the same substance.
Example: Water drop sticking to another water drop
Attraction between molecules of different substances.
Example: Water on a penny

Substance that gets dissolved in the solvent
Solvent + Solute = Solution

Sour taste & feels sticky

React with bases to form water and salt
Low pH (less than 7)
Gives a proton
Turns litmus paper red

Bitter taste & feels slippery

React with acids to form water and salt
High pH (More than 7)
Turns litmus paper blue

Summary: This week in biology, we wrote notes, graded our notebooks and took a test. On Monday, we learned
about water molecules, surface tension, adhesion and cohesion. On Tuesday we graded our notebooks and
reviewed our test. On Wednesday, we continued our notes on Hydrogen Biology and we watched a video. On
Thursday we took a test. Finally, on Friday, we learned about the pH scale and about solvents, solutes, and
solutions.
