Battle of Wits: A Juxtaposition of

Experience and Achievements

BY SCOTT ARSENAULT

Thesis

Between Sir Mackenzie Bowell, past Prime minister

from Belleville, and Dr Roberta Bondar, Mac is the
most successful.

Universal Woman
Roberta is ridiculous; More precisely, her achievements are. She is the Doctor of doctors, as

well as the first Canadian female astronaut in space. Instead of noting her individual
degrees, I will only mention what universities she was honored by for her contributions to
society: Mount St. Vincent , Ryerson Polytechnic, Guelph, Lakehead,
Laurentian, Saint Marys, McMaster, Regina, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, and
Algoma College. Roberta was also awarded several fellowships for specific
contributions to Science.
She is also honorary life member of the Girl Guides.

Town Man
Sir Mac emigrated to Belleville in the

early 1800s. He understudied at The

Belleville Intelligencer before joining
the Belleville's local Militia.
With the Militia he defended
Canada's border during the American
Civil War.
After the war, he continued working
at the newspaper until finding an
interest in politics.
Due to the untimely death of the
previous Prime Minister, he was
given the esteemed title, and ran
Canada for roughly two years.

Conclusion
It is difficult to decide who should be more revered; The lady with
an avalanche worth of accolades or the man who ran Canada for two
years.
Given that both were greatly successful during there overall
lifetimes, it seems clear that Sir Mackenzie Bowell has the greatest
impact on Canada. He may not be as well known, but he had a major
role, like any Prime Minister, in shaping the way Canada looks today.
He, in some small way, indirectly influenced how Roberta would
live her life.
