Topic/Objective: Biomolecules
Essential Question: How can we investigate the structure and function of biomolecules and the role they play in
life?
Questions:
Notes:
Lipids are made to store long-term energy usually found in fat. Its
monomers are the fatty acids and the structure is CHO (mostly C
and H). An example of this would be cholesterol.
What are
Carbohydrates?
What are Nucleic
Acids?
Proteins are made to build enzymes and build/repair the body. The
monomers of proteins are amino acids. The structure of these are
CHON. An example of this would be dairy products.
Carbohydrates, or carbs, are ways for quick energy boosts. The
structure for carbohydrates is a ring shape with CHO. Pasta is an
example of carbs. The monomers are monosaccharides.
Nucleic Acids are made to pass on genetics. The structure of
nucleic acids is CHONP with a phosphate group, a nitrogen base,
and a 5 carbon sugar as the monomers.
Carbon bonds are bonds with carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen,
phosphorous, oxygen, and sulfur.
Summary: Nucleic acids, carbs, lipids, and proteins are all necessary but can lead to fat if there is an excess. All of
these are able to have carbon bonds. These all have monomers that are used separately but combine to create
polymers. All of these have CHO as well. All of these are or can be consumed by our bodies.
