(BELLEVILLE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA) Ryan Thistle
Opening statement
Sir Mackenzie Bowell was not the Prime
Minister for long, as he was only a replacement for former Prime Minister, John Thompson, who died unexpectedly in 1894.
Mackenzie Bowell loved his trains. He loved toy
ones and real ones. Especially the real ones. He owned a short line named The Belleville and North Hastings Railway. This railway went to neither Belleville or North Hastings, but it did connect two longer railways that did.
Bowell served in a militia of 65 men, entitled The
Bellville Rifle Company in 1858. He served guarding the boarder of upper Canada during the American Civil War.
He served very well in his ministerial duties and was
promoted to the title of Prime Minister of Canada following the death of previous Prime Minister, John Thompson.
Mackenzie Bowell was not an outstanding Prime
Minister by far, but he is very well known in the city of Belleville. Although he did serve his duties as expected of the citizens of Canada.
Dr. Roberta Bondar (First
Canadian woman in space)
On January 22, 1992, Roberta Bondar became
the first ever Canadian woman to go to space.
Roberta won numerous awards in her lifetime. The
biggest award she won was in 1985. She won an award named the Vanier Award after she was selected as an outstanding young Canadian by the Jaycees of Canada.
She received a Honorius causa award in 1990 from
Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Again, in 1991, she received yet another Honorius causa from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
In a way, Roberta Bondar did a lot for Canada. She did
not do a lot while she was winning awards but she did put a very good reputation on Canada as an astronaut. Her contribution to space exploriation played a big role for Canada.
