HST ISM 1* Semester 2015
Some information on this presentation may come from outside sourcesWhat s ISM?
* ISM isa course provided at Clear Springs High School that enables students
to meet with a mentor in a career of their choice to explore Future earcer
options.
* Ibis administered by Mes. Kristi Click and the students are expected to ean
mentorship observation hours, complete assignments and keep a log of
activities.
My Mentors Background
* Dr. Scott first began her education at Texas of
A&M University, earned a BS in Biomedical
Sciences, graduating in 1996.
She then earned her DDS at University of Texas
Dental Branch at Houston in 2001and went on
if to hee Orthodontic Resideney and earning 2
Masters of Science in Dentistry (MDS) at Saint
Amands Whitley and Dr Seott Louis University in Saint Louis, 2004,Why I Chose This Project
* Thave been going to Radney and Scott Orthodontics since I was 12 years
‘old, and being around orthodontics is what influenced my decision 10
mentor in orthodontics and see if that is what I want to do asa future career.
My project is based on the theory that if a lower removable splint is used in
rather than a fixed lower Herbst there will be little if and lower incisor
flaring,
Dr Scott helped me develop this project because when I first talked to het
about mentoring me she mentioned ir as a good project idea so I stuck with
it so 1 could develop it earlier

Herbst Project Introduction
What is a Herbst?
‘The Herbert appliance is an This semester I have studied the Herbst
ihedonc eevee that emis appliance with a removable splint effects on
wel mullochsions to improve the
the lower incisors. Iam going to conclude
tite br inducing wandivuar growth
whether or not the removable spline w
cffective in preventing lower incisor flaring,Background

Hypothesis
* The lower removable Herbst appliance will prevent lower incisor flaring,
thereby maximizing the Class II correction uriizing skeletal growth of the
jaw to improve the patients biteHerbst Design
Herbst Design Con’t
* The device consist of 2 tube, plunges, two pivots and two locking serews that prevent
the telescoping clerrents from slipping past one another
1+ The pivot for the tooth is soldesed to the maxillary fet molas and the pivot for the
plioger is attached at the mandibular frst premolar area of the lower removable splat.
* The teleseopie mbe that holds the jaw forward to direct the growth of the mandible

isolated che Herbst treatment cases from the patient data hase at Radney and Scott
Orthodonties for the past 5 years
‘This yielded 63 Herbst treatment cases to evaluate
“After recording those cases, I saved the images of each subject patieats, before
‘teatment and after Herbst removal, cephalometric tracings and before teatment and
after treatment photos far cafaceaces.
Ttheroby analyzed the tracings to record the IMPA (incisor mandibular plane angle
‘umber} that show's the inclination of the lower incisor for start and post Herbst
Project Details
* Here Ihave shown a few case examples to illustrate the results achieved with
a removable splint, Herbst appliance, I have circled the lower incisor angle to
identify whether there has been any change to the Jower incisors.Case I Evaluation
* In this case, we see that the highlighted incisor angle did not change
therefore there was no effect on this patients lower incisors from use of the
Herbst appliance. In this case, the lower splint was effective.Case II Evaluation
* In this Case there was no Incisor change as well, therefore no effect from
Herbst on the lower incisors making the lower spline effective.Case IIT
* In this case, the highlighted numbers show a decrease in lower incisor angle,
therefore there was a rcelining effect on the teeth from the splint.Case IV Evaluation
* In this case there was an increase in the lower incisor angle, therefore the
Herbst appliance did cause lower incisor flaring, though it was minimal due
to the removable splint.Case V Evaluation
* In this case there was a decrease in the lower incisor angle as well. Another
redining effect from the Herbst applianceResult Variable:
Conclusion
* Data shows, the removable splint does control the amount of incisor flaring,
minimizing its change. Results varied from patient to patient, some
experienced no flaring at all and some expetienced more during the Herbst
weutment.
* There are many variables that contributed to the amount of lower incisor
flaring such as genetic growth variasion that was not evaluated in this study
* ‘The average change is not likely statistically significant.Thank You!
Twould like to thenk my mentor, Dr. Meredith Scott for helping me on this
educational journey.
would like to also thank may mentor and teacher Mrs. Click for helping me achieve
‘my goals throughout the year.
would like to thenk my graders for taking tine our of there schedlule to give me an
oppoctunity to show them my work.
“And I would like to thank my parents for letting me take this appornaaity for theie
ove and support, and for providing me with resources I need to achieve my goals,
