ActsofCruelty
Whensomeonereferencesactsofcruelty,thisimmediatelyremindsmeofaspecific
playthathasbeenknownforitsactsofcruelty:
TheCrucible
.Theplaytellsthestoryofthetown
ofSalem,wherepeoplearebeingpersecutedandexecutedforbeingwitches.Neighborsturn
againstneighbors,andthepeopleofSalemgocrazyaccusingoneanotherofbeingwitches.
Manyinnocentpeoplearepubliclykilled,whichcausesreaderstoask,Howandwhydidthese
actsofcrueltytakeplace?
Theperpetratorsinthisbookarenotonlytheexecutors,butalsothepeopleaccusingone
another.Alotoftimes,onepersonwhohadagrudgeagainstanotherwouldfindevidenceofthe
persontheyhadanissuewithpossessingthesocalledevilspirit.Forexample,onewomanwho
haddeliveredsickordeadbabiesaccusedthemidwifeofbeingawitch.Oncethesewitches
hadbeendiscovered,thepeopleofthetownwouldthenforcethemintooutoftheirhomesand
intoajailcell.Theywentthroughquickandunfairtrials,andmoreoftenthannot,thoseaccused
werealsoconvicted.Afterbeingconvicted,theywerepubliclyhangedinthetownsquaretobe
anexampletothepeople.Itisclearthattheseactsofcrueltywereacrucialpartintheplay.
Thisrevealsalotabouttheperpetrators.Forthemanipulativeaccusers,itshowstheir
bitterness.Mostoftheaccusersknewthepersontheywereturninginwasntreallyawitch.Their
motivationcamefromaplaceofangerandunhappinesswiththatperson.Itshowshowhumans

imperfectstatecancausethemtoallowbadfeelingstomakehorriblethingshappen.Many
innocentpeoplediedbecauseofthis.Theotherperpetratorswerethosewhoconvictedthe
witches.Towardstheendofthetrials,thesecharactersknewthatthepeopletheywere
convictingwerentreallywitches.Butinsteadofstoppingwhattheyweredoing,theykept
havingthetrials.Theyrealizedthattheykilledalotofinnocentpeople,andtheybelievedthatif
theystoppedwhattheyweredoing,thepeoplewouldrealizethebloodguilttheyhad.Theycared
moreaboutthemselvesthanthelivesofthewitchestheywerekilling.Itrevealedalotabout
thesecharactersofthisplay.
Itisobviousthat
TheCrucible
isapowerfulstoryfullofcruelty.Thereisnowonderwhy
itisstilltaughtanddiscussedinclassesandschoolsaroundtheworld.Thesituationsdiscussed
inthisplayareimportant,anditwillcontinuetobestudiedforalongtime.
