In order to help us to be sensitive and educated about the various

traditions that people celebrate this time of year, we are going to practice
what weve learned about RESEARCH to look up some holiday traditions
that may/OR MAY NOT be celebrated by our own culture.
*FOR EACH source that you use, you need to fill out a Source Evaluation
Worksheet.
*You MUST use AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT sources!
*YOU MAY NOT use Wikipedia as a source for this, particular, assignment
(HOWEVER you MAY use it to begin your research)
*YOU MAY NOT use direct quote from the source UNLESS you put that
quote in quotation marks! THIS MEANS YOU MUST PARAPHRASE MUCH OF
YOUR INFORMATION!!
*TO PARAPHRASE, you may not use more than THREE words from the
original text.
*EVEN if you paraphrase, you must still fill out a Source Evaluation
Worksheet for your source.
On Friday, we will have a Holiday Celebration in which you will present
your research to the class. You must present:
1. The culture of the tradition that you researched (i.e. Hispanic, African American,
Indian, Asian,
Catholic, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Southern Baptist, etc. . .)
2. The general history of the tradition (How it began, why it began, etc.)
3. Why the tradition is celebrated
4. How the tradition is celebrated now (Who, what, when, where, why, how)
5. Where you would most likely see this tradition celebrated
6. How the tradition is similar to or different than a tradition in your OWN
culture
7. Any interesting facts about that tradition.
8. What THREE sources you used for your research/ where students can go to find
more information
9. What was the most interesting thing that YOU LEARNED and why!
This may be done in a poster, brochure, power point, etc, but it NEEDS TO BE
QUALITY!! You will NOT have a reading log this week so that you may focus on your
project and you will have FOUR DAYS IN CLASS to work on this. DO NOT waste your
time and HAVE FUN AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
