Syllabus for Painting I


Art is a communication and that it can serve as an escape from our busy
lives. As an artist, we should put a piece of ourselves into every artwork that I make.
Everything we make holds a statement about ourselves and how we perceive the
world around us.
Week 1: MandalasStudents will learn about the use of Mandalas for meditation and build their
own using sand painting.
Week 2-3: ImpressionismStudents will create a painting of their choice using impressionism.
Week 4-5: SurrealismStudents will create paintings inspired by Frida Kahlo or Salvador Dalis work.
Weeks 6-8: Photo RealismStudents will use graphing technique to scale and create a photo realistic
painting of their choice.
Weeks 9-11: Art HistoryStudents will research an artist, create a painting inspired from that artists
style, and write a two page paper based on their research.
Weeks 12-14: Happy PlacesStudents will make a painting that resembles their Happy Place that helps
them calm down when overwhelmed by using inspiration from artists such as
Gustav Klimt, Mary Cassatt, Ivalio Nikolov, Salvador Dali, and Frida Kahlo.
Weeks 15-16: Free Choice FinalStudents will have the freedom to choose any painting style they are
passionate about, create a formal proposal to me and create their own work of art.
Grading Scale: Your grade will be distributed between
50%- Completed Projects
25%- Reflections on work
15%- Participation in Critique
10%- Attendance

Late WorkLate work will only be accepted for credit within three days past the date due after
meeting with the instructor ahead of time.
Revised WorkEach student can come to me at a later date for a critique on a piece. You may
make revisions to a previous work and resubmit it for a better grade on that
assigned project.
Classroom ConductMy classroom will be a safe environment where exploring artmaking is not only
encouraged, but necessary for a passing grade. Each student will learn to better
critique each others and their own work through a positive discussion along with
individual and classroom critiques. Make your own original work!
