Grade: 2
Duration: 15-20 mins
Core Music Standards: Create, Perform, Respond, Connect
Repertoire: Kilimanjaro
Other Teaching Materials: Voice
Lesson Objectives:
Students will:
Review and fully learn Kilimanjaro
Be able to remember facts about the Kilimanjaro
Remember what call and response is and demonstrate it
Use movements to reflect the meaning of Kilimanjaro
Sing and dance to Kilimanjaro with accurate pitch and rhythm
Work together and form a creative idea for a dance to Kilimanjaro
Prepare:
I will have them gather in one line on the carpet (I will start with four beats of movement
with them repeating it while I show them the next four movements to do. I will tell them
to reflect the same dynamics and style that Im using.
Present:

I will sing through Kilimanjaro, as the caller, and I will have them respond to see
how much they remember. (I will have the words on either a Powerpoint or a
board.)
I will see what things need to be fixed, and fix the problems.
We will review and practice the offbeat entrances.
We will sing through Kilimanjaro, but I will ask for volunteers to be the callers
and switch between them.
I will split them up into 2 groups and have them come up with choreography for
Kilimanjaro, and then they will perform their version for the other group. (If there
is time, I think this would allow them to use their creativity instead of me giving
them a certain dance to do.)

Practice & Extend:

We will review the meaning of call and response, and they will have a
chance to actually apply the call side. Working as a team to come up
with chorography, and this will truly allow all students to participate.
This is also a performance opportunity for the students to perform and
gain confidence in front of their peers.
