The Cake Challenge Project
A company that specializes in making custom cakes has just hired you as a designer! Your jab is to
design the frosting decoration/picture for the top of their cakes. This company has a policy of
using only geometric shapes to make the pictures on their cake designs. Today your task is to
create a design plan on an 8.5” x 17” piece of paper for a picture of an animal,a rocket ship, ora
building using only geometric shapes. Measure all of your shapes and find the total area of the
abject in your picture to determine how much frosting you will need to make the design. In your
drawing you must include the following shapes:
+ rectangles or squares ‘You must include at least 2
+ circles of each kind of shape, and
~ triangles you must have at least 2
+ parallelograms different sizes of each shape!
+ trapezoids
Follow these directions to create your design:
Step 1: Decide what your cake design will be. Circle your choice below.
Tam going to make a picture of a/an:
ANIMAL ROCKET SHIP BUILDING
Step 2: Draw or cut out your shapes. You may want to measure your shapes first before cutting them or
drawing them on paper (Step 5). Circle your choice below.
Tam going to:
DRAW MY OWN SHAPES CUT OUT THE SHAPES HANDOUT
Step 3: Number your shapes by writing 1, 2, 3, etc. in the middle of the shape.
Step 4: Decide whether you will use inches or centimeters to measure your shapes.
Iam going to measure my shapes using (circle one):
INCHES, CENTIMETERS
Step 5: Measure your shapes. You may want to do this before you cut them out or make them (see Step 2).
As you measure them, fill out the Calculations sheet. Then use the measurements to calculate the AREA of
each shape to find out how much frosting you will need for your design. On the calculations sheet you must
write the formula you used to calculate the area, plug in your measurements, and write the area for each
shape. YOU MUST SHOW ALL YOUR WORK. YOU MUST INCLUDE UNITS! Sum all of your areas and write
the total area for the frosting you need.
Step 6: Arrange your shapes to make an animal, a rocket ship, or a building on one half of an 8.5" x 17”
piece of paper. (See the example.) Draw your shapes or glue cut out shapes down on the paper. Shapes
should not overlap! Glue or tape the Calculations sheet on the other half of the piece of paper. Once you
are done you can add color if you want to get creative!EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS PROJECT:
___ I measured all of my shapes accurately
I calculated the area of all of my shapes and the total area accurately
___. I showed all my work for my calculations
Tused correct units in my calculations and final answers for area
My design picture includes rectangles/squares, circles, triangles, parallelograms, and
trapezoids - at least 2 of each and at least two different sizes of each
None of my shapes overlap and all are clearly labeled
My final design includes a picture made using shapes, the Calculations sheet, and my name is
on the paper
My writing is legible enough that my teachers can read what I wrote
My work shows that | put effort into this project and into my calculations
Ifyou want a challenge to go above standard, ask Mrs. Brown or Ms. Mansfield!
