NAME: DATE: Action Figure Scale Project Congratulations! You have been hired by the Acme Entertainment Company to design a new action Of course you want to model the action figure off of someone who is smart, talented, good ng, funny, and fantastic, so obviously you decide to model th: figure off of yourself. You will need to take some measurements to develop your “Mini Me” design to send to the Acme Entertainment Co. Follow the directions to take the measurements and create your design. Step 1 - Ask a classmate to help you find your measurements, you will need someone else to help hold the tape measure or yard stick and read the numbers. Step 2 - Use a tape measure or yard stick to take your measurements of the dimensions shown on the diagram shown here. Measure in CENTIMETERS only! Record the dimensions in the table on your data sheet in the Real Life Measurements column, **Please be respectful of your classmates and be careful as you measure your dimensions. We donot want anyonetobe — L / uncomfortable or to get hurt!** Step 3 — Get a scale card from your teacher. Your scale card will have a fraction on 2444 such a5 5) 75/357 qq * This fraction is called a “scale” and it is the number that you multiply each of your Real Life Measurements by to find the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” for your Mini Me action figure design. Write your scale on your data sheet in the first scale box. Lunit on model size of the drawing model 10 units on the real object ‘size of the real object scale = 1 example: scale 7 This means that every 10 units measured in real life is represented by 1 unit on your paper drawing. (Or think about this another way: for a drawing on your paper, every unit on your drawing would have to be enlarged to ten times its size to reach the size an object is in real life.) Step 4 — Now calculate the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” by multiplying “Your Real Life Measurements” numbers by your scale factor. Show all steps by first writing your problem as. a non-reduced fraction in the fraction box provided in the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” column. Then divide the numbers to find the measurements for your Mini Me and write ‘those on the line provided in the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” column. Step 5 - Get a piece of paper, a compass, and a ruler. This paper will be your Mini Me action figure design. Write your NAME and the SCALE FACTOR on the paper right now! NAME: DATE: Step § - Now use your “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” numbers to draw an action figure model just like the drawing diagram above. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND PRECISE WHEN YOU MEASURE WITH YOUR RULER! ACCURACY COUNTS! In your drawing, the torso should be a quadrilateral, the arms and legs should be rectangles, and the head/neck should be a circle. The shape of your drawing should look a lot like the example above but without the dimension arrows. ‘Step 7 - Like all good action figures, your Mini Me action figure will come with an accessory: its own Micro Me action figure, a mini action figure modeled off of your Mini Me action figure! Get a second scale card from your teacher. This card will have the scale factor 5 or + on it. Write this scale factor on your data sheet in the second scale box. ‘Step 8 — Now calculate the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Micro Me” by multiplying “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Mini Me” numbers by your second scale factor. Show all steps by first writing your problem as a non-reduced fraction in the fraction box provided in the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Micro Me” column. Then divide the numbers to find the measurements for your Micro Me and write those on the line provided in the “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Micro Me” column. Step 9— On the same piece of paper on which you drew your Mini Me action figure design, write your SECOND SCALE FACTOR. Step 10 - Now use your “Measurements to Use When You Draw Your Micro Me” numbers to draw a mini action figure model just like your Mini Me action figure but smaller. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND PRECISE WHEN YOU MEASURE WITH YOUR RULER! ACCURACY COUNTS! ‘Step 11 - Trade drawing designs with a classmate. You should check each other's measurements and drawings to make sure they are correct. Make sure the measurements match the data sheet numbers. Make sure you have your name and BOTH scale factors on your design sheet. Once you have made sure everything is perfect, turn in your drawing and data sheet! NEXT STEP: Now your Mini Me action figure has one accessory: it’s own Micro Me action figure! Your next assignment is to create a second accessory for your Mini Me action figure. At home find an object that you would like your Mini Me action figure to have as an accessory. The object should be something appropriate, something that you can physically measure easily (like a simple shape), and something of which you can draw a simple picture. The accessory should also be something that you like, or that represents you well. Remember, this accessory will come with every single one of the millions of your Mini Me action figures sold! Homework: Pick an accessory, measure it in centimeters, write down the measurements and bring ‘them to school on Tuesday for the next part of the activity. SCALE PROJECT
