When Faith and Reason Mix

Faith and reason may seem mutually exclusive at times, but in reality, they work together
to generate a positive change in the world.

Faiths generally thought of as believing something without necessarily seeing it. Reason
seems to presuppose logic and pure knowledge. The two are often thought of as discrete
principles. James F. Fauleoner of the Wheatley Institution, however, offers a case for a
relationship between the two in his article “Faith and Reason,”

February of 2015. Not only do faith and reason have a relationship with each other, but
‘they also interact with othergoncepis¢such as friendship and persuasi
Feith, Fauloonet says, does not necessarily have to comprise only religious confidence
although that may be a part of it. Rather, faith can be any incident of trust—between
| fiends or between man and God. Faith Jeads to testimony and revelation. In turn, reason.
develops and flourishes. Finally, “reason . .. leads us gently to the certainty of the Good.”
‘Thus, faith and reason work join in order to create a bond of fitendship between two
individuals, Faulconer highlights an often-overiooked element ofthe subsequent
fiiendship-persuasion. Persuasion, en down o is Latin roots, holds a its heart the
idea of “sweet or pleasant.” Hence, Faulconer remind us that persuasions purpose is
to convince someone ofthe other's corecness but “wo bring about. change in us, in
currelation, and, consequetl. inthe world"
