Misleading Advertisements: An Annotated Bibliography
Rivers, Keith. "Dear Brands, Honesty Is the Future of Advertising - Digi day." Digi day. N.p.,
20. July 2015. Web. 17 Nov. 2015
Keith Rivers, a writer who is writing about how people want honesty in advertisements. How the
advertisers are selling their product, whether they are able to sell, they need to have
communication with the consumers. He talks about what the consumers really want from the ads
and building trust instead of trying to force something on people, trying to get them to buy and
spend money. And not treating them like they are a small child who doesnt know any better.
Keith also addresses people wanting brands to think about them and not just have money on their
mind.
I find this source reliable because Keith is just like everyone who wants honesty with the ads and
also wanting change. Its current so this tells me that people are aware of this issue and that this
writer knows about how advertisers and not honest, he notice what the advertisers are doing.so
that makes him know what he is talking about.
This will help will help my essay, my topic and the issue that I am addressing. He just wants the
readers to be informed about the issue.it fits good with my other sources they goo good with each
other and gives the others more complete. This has not made me change I still feel the same
toward the topic and with this I have a better understanding.

College writer .Ed Paul Eschholz an Alfred Rosa. By Virginia Clark .11th Ed, Boston:
Bedford / St. Martins, 2013. 415-425. Print
In this article William talks about the words that advertisers use to get the people convince and
have that urge to buy the product. These word are called weasel words .Advertisers are more
careful to what they put in their ads so that the FTC wont be a part of it.using words like help

Arias 2

for medicine , companies are using the word so that people would want it so that that product
will help them because who doesnt want something to help them out. But using the word help in
an ad sometimes doesnt really mean that it will help it will take it away many people
misunderstand that. Also ads using the word virtually a lot and again people are not being
aware of that word, also covering the new and improved, act fast ,works like anything else, like
magic these words get the peoples attention. Ads that double speak, unfinished words and also
combining that words that advertisers use as well.
I find this article very reliable not only does it go good with what my argument is about William
Lutz really wrote it very accurate I like how he wrote his paper very well documented. The goal
for this is to inform the readers that they should be aware of the words that are being used in ads
that they watch and I think it will good to use as an example in my essay. This is a very popular
article, many people have read this and us in their essay as well. This goes good with my other
sources because they help each other, it helps back up my point and help make my essay strong
using this source.
I will use this article to prove my point, that advertisements do anything and will say anything to
convince the people to buy something. And how they will use words to get peoples attention and
not really meaning what they say when presenting this product to the consumers. This has not
made me change what I think of this I still feel the same and feel that many should be aware of
this issue and not let these companies try to lie just to make profit off of us.

Ferderman, Sarah. Whats so natural about our natural products? Language Awareness:
Readings for college writer .Ed Paul Eschholz an Alfred Rosa. By Virginia Clark .11th
Ed, Boston: Bedford / St. Martins, 2013. 441-445. Print.
In this article it talks about the fact that many are being manipulated into buying and convince
that products with labeling that say either natural, fresh, organic, local, and wholesome thinking
that it will be good and healthy for you. Thinking that the word natural is a healthy alternative,
no chemicals thats what we think when thinking and wanting to buy these things some having
sugar that is not healthy. Sarah is telling what kinds of products that we think may be healthy but
in fact its not such as, Snapple, apple sauce, and the fruit cocktail these may say natural but
some cases they are not, foods that you think is good like ingredients will not be as well.
I find this article very reliable it has good information and gives good examples to how these
products may not be healthy when they seem like it when the companies make it look like it is.
And how Sarah mentions that companies put in their labels words like healthy and natural, we all
think that when we see those words its going to be healthy especially when we are trying to be
healthy it makes us want it because that how we want to be, we want the healthy, organic foods
we want natural with no chemicals. I find her qualified because just like me she is a consumer
and want healthy food that means what it says. What she is trying to do is trying to inform others
about labels and be aware and look into what labels say or you wont know the truth behind it.

The fact are well documented, and this compares with my other sources by telling how
companies are not meaning what they say about their product.
This will go good to what I am saying about advertisements just trying to get people to by their
things by not really caring. They dont care if the food that they are selling isnt healthy like they
say, it will help my essay have a good strong evidence and help my readers have a better
understanding of how and why companies dont care and just want their product sold.it has not
changed my mind about anything it only has encourage me to make a well written essay and help
my readers understand and have a good solution on how we should solve this issue.

O'Neil, Ashley. "A Call For Truth In The Fashion Pages: What The Global Trend In

May, Bill, Dr. "Caveman Books." False Advertising; Do We Need Laws and Regulations?
N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Nov. 2015
Dr. May is arguing the fact that lying is wrong. And most advertisers are misleading the innocent
people getting them to believe the claims that most are deceiving just to make profits. He
questions if we need a government agency to settle the issue that we been having with the
advertisers a lot of people are affected by the lying and the manipulation for a long time he then
suggest what can be done to help everyone have more trust for the advertisements and so that the
advertises will possibly stop the lying. He offers suggestions like, bring in the bureaucracy, court
system, and mentioning the lawyers will be glad to help for the big pay. And not knowing if the
government solution is doing the job that they should be doing which is trying to stop, and
prevent the false claims.
I found that this source was helpful with the reasons that the author Dr. May he knows what he is
talking about he knows the right and wrong of a situation and with the situation like advertisers
lying to consumers is wrong I like that fact how he gives suggestions of how or who should help
with the problem I fell he is qualified to speak about this everyone should because we all watch
and our apart of a community that ads are everywhere. He is trying to get people to know that
advertisers are lying and that the government should take action. This article is has gotten some
people attention there are comments made by people who are aware of this issue and want the
lying to stop. This goes good with my other sources that I have researched because it is going
with the argument that I am trying to make and it helps with my solution to help this problem.
This will help with my argument and solution that I have come up with Dr. May has suggestion
of his own to how we can get the issue solved and it helped with mine as well and helps me
come up with how I will go about on how we all can take charge and make the advertisers stop
the lying. This has not changed my attitude or the way I think about this topic because I know

that lying to the consumers who are well deserved people who need the truth in the products that
is being purchased.
Chaudhuri, Sangkrito Ray, and Damodaram Sanjivayya. "An Article on False and Misleading
Advertisements." (n.d.): 1-15. Web.
This article talks about how powerful advertisements has gotten powerful. Ads are everywhere,
and how they are not truthful with people offering different types of things that will get people
convince that they need that product. Giving examples of what exactly is an ad that is lying and
just not doing what they are supposed to do. He gives the definitions of what misleading is in the
advertisements world and tells what you as a consumer can do to prevent from falling for these
untruthful ads.
Although it does not say what the year or date is I think it is current because of what the author
says the information seems current and reliable. He is a student at a university so I dont think he
will make it up. The goal is to help people understand and to inform his readers, helping them
with preventing and not believing what is being said on every ad the facts are good , good
enough to use. This compares with the other sources by helping others know what it really is
when ads are lying and help the situation.
I will use this to help with my solution that I thought of I will use this as an example and then tell
what my solution to the problem. I think it will make my argument good and this has not
changed my thoughts on this issue.

Whittelsey, Frances Cerra.Fostering Truth In Advertising. Nations Business 86.7

(1998):66.Academic Search Premier.Web.22 Nov.2015.
In this journal by Whittelsey and Frances Cerra, they first talk about a movement in 1970 and the
nations leading advertising agencies. And how they formed alliances with the CBBB council of
better bureaus .this was to make sure advertisements were being watched carefully and making
sure there is no misleading to the consumers. President of the CBBB is wanting to do well by the
consumers, to have trust in the advertisers. They then mention the slogans and gives an example
of how Walmart having a slogan of always the low price so they had to change it to always
low price they had to change it so that people werent being misled. Also mention a law
protection for the consumers so when the advertisers are using false or misleading ads so if so
then they will have to go the FTC federal trade commissions.
The fact that they talk about slogans and mentions the FTC I would like to write something about
slogans and think this information will go good with m essay. Author Frances is arguing that
advertisers are not being right with their slogans and she change if what is being said about the
product isnt what it really means. The facts are well put together, it goes good with all resources
and will help each of them out in their own way.
As I said I would like to use an example of slogans in my essay and thing this would go good
with my point that I will make.it will make my point stronger and make a good point. This has

not changed the way I think of the topic I find this topic very important and useful for people to
know about it and by using this will do that for me.

Sauter, Michael B., and Thomas C. Frohlich. "The 9 Most Misleading Product Claims."
247wallst.com. N.p., 20 May 5015. Web. 22 Nov. 2015.
In the 9 most misleading products claims by writer Michael B. sauter and Thomas C. frohlich
they talk about some of the most misleading products some may not know the real from the fake
and thats whats being talked about. The (ftc) filing many cases each year when something isnt
properly handled, having to deal with financial penalties, listing the most misleading products
such as: ADT pulse, vitamin water ,plastic lumber , PS vita , snap chat , red bull, Loreal Paris
,jungle rogers those are some of the untruthful ads according to Michael and Thomas. They
explain how these companies individually have been misleading to their consumers.
I find this really reliable the fact that they are telling how these companies each are being
untruthful to people, they tell what they have done to people and what kinds of lies they have
told to be able to sell a product. Yes they are qualified to speak about this. The facts are well put
together and were researched as well. I would say that this got some views enough for it to be
known. This compares with my other sources because it is stating the fact that ads could lie and
just say what they want just so they are able to sell and get money out of the consumers.
This fits in to my research because I will use it to give examples of companies that are not being
honest with people. I think it will back up what Im going to say I think with the information in
the article will give my essay what it needs which is evidence that a lot of companies are doing
this.it has not changed anything that I feel for this topic it made me realize that a lot of
companies are not honest and the ones that the writers list I did not know that they would be
considered a misleading company.
