Soil Analysis
Soil analysis
- One of the most important determinants
of characteristics of a certain location.
- Dictates whether a specific location is
appropriate for a specific use.
- In this experiment, soil condition was
determined using four different tests- pH
test, availability of phosphorus and iron,
and amount of organic matter.

Soil pH
Theory
- Soil pH is a very important factor
when considering how and where soil
should be used. Soil pH measures the
hydronium ion activity.
- At optimum pH, crops grow at its
peak.

Methods
Soil pH
- Soil sample were tested for their pH
using a pH meter. Instrument was
first calibrated with two buffer
solution (pH of four and seven)
before triplicate of samples were
tested.

Available Phosphorus
Theory
- Phosphorus content in soil is very
important for plant growth .
- Directly affected by soil pH.

Methods
Phosphorus was calculated using its
phosphate form.
Phosphate was first extracted from
soil using Sodium bicarbonate at pH
8.5.
Activated carbon as this a means to
eliminate color from extract.
UV-vis spectrometer was used to
read absorbance of phosphate in
sample.

Methods
Phosphorus is estimated calorimetrically
by adding Ammonium Molybdate.
Phosphor Molybdate is formed by
coordination of Molybdate ions with
Phosphorus as the central coordinating
atom, the Oxygen of the molybdate
being substituted for that of PO4
