BOX GIRDER BRIDGES

In box girder bridge the main beam

comprises girders in the shape oh a hollow
box
Box is rectangular or trapezoidal in crosssection
Box girders comprises of either
prestressed concrete and structural steel
or a composite of steel and reinforced
concrete

Used

in
Highway flyovers
Modern elevated structures
Cable stayed bridges

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
1. Permissible stresses
. Permissible stresses in concrete are
derived from IRC-21:2000 and IRC18:2000
2. Cross section of box girders
. Based on span of the section overall
depth is determined
. Thickness of web is computed as per
clause 9.3.2.1 of IRC-18:2000

3. Design of slab panel

Maximum positive and negative dead
load bending moment should be
calculated
Maximum positive and negative bending
moment due to live load is calculated
Shear force due to dead and live load is
computed
Top slab section is designed based on the
design maximum bending moment
Minimum supplementary reinforcement is
provided based on clause 15.4 of IRC18:2000

4. Design of web girder

Continuous box girder is treated as an
assemblage of I-sections with web
serving the function of a main girder
and flanges of symmetrical size.
Bending moment and shear force for
dead and live loads are computed for
continuous web girder
For prestressing section minimum
section modulus is checked
Prestressing force is predicted as per
section modulus and stress in the
extreme fibres

At transfer and service stage stresses at

extreme fibres are computed for end and
mid section
Theses stresses should lie below the max
permissible limits
Ultimate flexural and shear strength
should be checked
This should be based on IRC-18:2000 for
failure by yielding of steel and crushing of
concrete
Ultimate flexural strength of centre span
and mid section should be greater than
the required design ultimate moment

5.Design of end block

Based on the computed bursting
tension value in end block zone of
post-tensioning slab, anchorage is
designed as per IRC-18:2000
