Welding Societies and Associations Agree That Thoriated Tungsten Should be Avoided!
iiW - International Institute of Welding’s Doc. |IW-2509, recommended for
publication by Commission VIII “Health, Safety and Environment” states in part:
The experts recommend that use of thoriated electrodes ceases as soon as is
practicable and that, until that change is completed, special care is taken to inform
workers of the hazards and to implement all the other protective measures which are
detailed in the report.” http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40194-014-0197-9
KEI] AWS - The American Welding Society's Satety and Health FACT Sheet No. 27 states
in part: “Choose thorium-free tungsten electrodes such as those containing
cerium, lanthanum, yttrium, or zirconium.” (AWS does NOT recommend the
" use of thoriated tungsten) hitp://www.aws.org/technical/facts/fact-27-201405.pdf
Choosing TIG Electrodes. (Non-consumed Tungsten Electrode)
#1 Choice -E3® AWS Classification - EWG, Color- Purple
Engineered to replace 2% thoriated, this electrode has excellent arc starting characteristics and lasts
longer when compared to most other electrode types. E3 runs approximately 1650°F cooler than 2%
thoriated. This cooler operating temperature means less oxide burn off and therefore longer life. When
tested side by side on mechanized equipment this electrode comes out on top.
(Our new state-of-the-art tungsten factory was built to meet the growing demand for £3° as well as our new product
line Anviloy® (a specialty tungsten material for die casting and tooling).

Tungsten
Electrodes
Your Best Choice To Replace 2% Thoriated
The new tungsten electrode that outperforms other electrode types in most
applications with no radioactive doping, resulting in a safer workplace environment.
Recommended E3® Tungsten Electrode Preparation
Note: Due to E3® Tungsten's Superior Electron Work Function, in most cases machine current
can be reduced or adjusted down by approximately 5%. This can be varied based on weldments,
electrode diameter and application.

Can you weld AC with E3° for metals like aluminum?
Yes E3® can be used in both AC and DC processes. Please note thatthe oxide containing Available From:
electrodes such as E3° will not “ball” the way pure tungsten does, however, this means R
that there willbe ess chance of tungsten inclusions within the weldment. Below are iecepeeiareeae
suggested methods of grinding for AC welding,
Suggested Method for Grinding E3° Tungsten for AC Welding (Square Wave) Airgas,
1) Wave structure: electrode positive 25%, electrode negative 75% ABICOR
2) Tip angle 60° with a flat up to 1/3 the diameter of the electrode BINZELS)
3) Cranking Amps: as low as possible
4) Amps (3/32 electrode): max. 210 A
Suggested Method for Grinding E3° Tungsten for AC Welding (Sine Wave)
For best results, just break edge of flattened electrode as shown
