Course Objectives: This course is designed for the second year applied physics students. This
includes the basic principles of electronics, electronic devices along with digital electronics. The
students will be able to cope with the problems related with semiconductors, diodes, amplifiers,
transistor etc. after completion of this course.
1. Network Theorems: Electric current, Kirchhoffs current and voltage law, Superposition
theorem, Reciprocity theorem, Thevenins theorem, Nortons theorem, Maximum power transfer
theorem. [6 Hrs.]
2. Semiconductor Devices: Conductor, Semiconductor, Intrinsic semiconductor, Extrinsic semiconductor, P-type, N-type semiconductor, P-N junction diode, V-I characteristics, Zener diode,
Photo diode, Varactor diode, LED, Schotky diode N-P-N and P-N-P transistors and characteristics of CE, CB and CC configurations, dc and dc of a transistor and their relationship. [7
Hrs.]
3. Wave shaping Circuits and Filters: Half wave rectifiers, Full wave rectifiers, Bridge rectifiers, Average value, rms value, Ripple factor, Rectification efficiency. Capacitors, Inductors,
LC and Filter, High pass, Low pass and Band pass filter, Regulated Power supplies using
zener diode, fixed voltage regulator using ICs. [11 Hrs.]
4. Field Effect Transistors: Introduction and V-I characteristics of JFET, MOSFET. [ 4 Hrs.]
5. Break down Devices: Introduction, Unijunction Transistor, Silicon Controlled Rectifier, Diac
and Triac. [4 Hrs. ]
6. Amplifiers: Single-Stage Transistor Amplifiers, Classification of Amplifiers, Class A, B and
C amplifiers, Method of transistor biasing, CE amplifiers, RC Coupled Amplifiers, Gain, Frequency Response, Transformer-Coupled Amplifier, Push-pull amplifier. [6 Hrs.]
7. Digital Electronics: Binary numbers, Binary to decimal conversion, Octal and Hexa decimal
number systems, Boolean algebra, basic laws of Boolean algebra, Boolean equations, Basic logic
gates (OR, AND,NOT,NAND,NOR and EX-OR gates using diodes and transistor),De Morgans
theorem, Half adder and Full adder, RS flipflop and JK flip flop. [10Hrs]
