The Dark

There is a reason
that Man fears the dark.
That thunderous quietthat swelling stillnessthat genuine coldthat unnerving deepness.
We hail the sun and cheer
the colours of the day.
Sweet Red, sky Blue, sear Whiteand ultraviolet huearrive to take away
that sudden baleful view.
But it comes back.
It always does.
In silent sleep it slips
into the sheets and
saddles up to youand slinks its arm around.
Around the fire we dance
eyes wide and screaming high
we slit the throat to see
and taste a vile wine
to sate malicious gods,
we celebrate and dine.
But it comes back.
It always does.
When that fire burns low
and the distractions disappear
the dark will hunt you down
and skin your eyes.
