Number of hours required to

reach the level

I am able to summarise information from different spoken and

written sources, reconstructing
arguments and accounts in a
coherent presentation. I express
myself spontaneously, very
fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning
even in the most complex
situations.

I understand virtually everything

I read with ease, from manuals
and other non-fiction, to works
of literature. I do not have any
difficulty listening to or taking
part in discussions or understanding the media.

CPE Certificate of Proficiency

in English

Group lessons:
approx. 600 full hours

I express myself fluently and

spontaneously without much
obvious searching for expressions, and use language flexibly
and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
I can also produce clear, wellstructured, and detailed text on
complex subjects.

I can understand the details of

a wide range of demanding,
longer texts, even if I am not
familiar with the topic. I can
even recognise implicit meaning
in most of what I read and hear,
both in my everyday life and in
the workplace.

CAE Certificate in Advanced

English
BEC Higher Business English
Certificate
ICFE International English Certificate in Financial English
ILEC International English
Certificate in Legal English

Group lessons:
approx. 500 full hours

I interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes

regular interaction with native
speakers quite possible without
strain for either party. I can also
produce clear, detailed text on
a wide range of subjects, in various genres.

I am able to understand the

main ideas of complex text
on both concrete and abstract
topics, and can read reports
and articles from trade journals
on familiar topics in my field of
specialisation.

FCE First Certificate in English

BEC Vantage Business English
Certificate

Group lessons:
approx. 400 full hours

I am able to deal with most

situations likely to arise while
travelling in an area where the
language is spoken, and can
produce simple connected text
on topics which are familiar. I
can describe experiences, hopes
and ambitions, and briefly give
reasons and explanations for my
opinions and plans.

I can understand the main

points of clear standard input
on familiar matters broadcast
on the radio or TV. I can also
understand language regularly
encountered in everyday life, at
work or at school.

PET Preliminary English Test

BEC Preliminary Business
English Certificate

I can communicate in simple

and routine tasks requiring a
simple and direct exchange of
information on familiar and routine matters. I can also describe
in simple terms aspects of my
background, work life and immediate environment. I am able
to write brief notes and short
personal letters or emails.

I can understand sentences

and frequently used expressions related to areas of most
immediate relevance (e.g. basic
personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). I can also
understand the main points of
short texts, such as adverts,
brochures, faxes, emails etc.

KET Key English Test

I can interact in a simple way

provided the other person talks
slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. I can introduce
myself and others, and can ask
and answer questions about
personal details, such as where I
live and people I know.

I can understand and use

familiar everyday expressions
and very basic phrases aimed
at the satisfaction of needs of a
concrete type, provided they are
spoken clearly. I am also able
to understand familiar words
and simple sentences on signs,

Laura has just changed her job. Until last month she
was working for a large American company in the
centre of Frankfurt. The work was interesting, but she
worked long hours. She often used to be at the office
from eight in the morning to six in the evening or even
later. Another problem was that she had to travel for
more than an hour to work every day when the trains
and buses were full and it was the same when she left
the office. A third problem was that she didn't earn
enough. A short while ago she found an ad in the
newspaper. A computer company near where she lives
wanted an office assistant. They offered a high salary.
Laura went to an interview and they offered her the
job. First she will have to take a computer course, but
when she finishes the course next month, she can start
work for the new company. She is happy about the
new job, of course. She'll certainly earn more than she
has done, she doesn't have to work more than thirtyeight hours a week and she will get five weeks' holiday
a year, one week more than at her last job.

Paul works in Frankfurt for an international business
magazine. He writes reports on the situation of the
money markets in Europe. He has to travel a lot for his
job in order to get the necessary information, but he
certainly doesn't mind travelling. Actually, he met his
future wife, Laura, during a flight from London to
Rome. She was sitting in the seat next to his when an
accident happened. Paul was drinking a glass of red
wine with his meal when the glass fell out of his hand
on to the new dress Laura had just bought in London.
Of course, she felt terribly upset. But after Paul had
said sorry at least ten times, she began to feel a little
happier and by the time they landed in Rome they had
become quite friendly. A few months later they got
married and moved into a new three-room flat in
Frankfurt.

his magazine. They wanted to send him to Tokyo for
three months to write regular reports about the banks

company wanted to send her to Tokyo, too, where they

Paul and Laura decided to keep their flat in Frankfurt

while they were in Japan. Fortunately, Laura had a
friend who wanted somewhere to live and they offered
her the flat until they needed it again. There was still
one problem they had to solve and that was to do with
Paul's parents. Mr and Mrs Spencer had retired and
had recently gone to live in a village in the country.
Paul and Laura were worried about them. Although
they were both in good health, Paul's parents always
found it difficult to make friends. When Laura and her
husband phoned them and mentioned their plans for
the future, neither of Paul's parents said very much.
Laura and Paul decided to leave for Japan only when
Paul's parents had found some new hobbies and
interests. One day Laura travelled to the village where
Mr and Mrs Spencer lived. She hadn't told them about
her visit because she wanted to see for herself what it
was like there. She arrived in the middle of a party,
which Mr and Mrs Spencer had organized for the
people in the village, many of whom had been very
active for years in business, too, but now they were
also looking for new interests and new friends. They
all belonged to a club and met regularly. They played
cards, organized trips and even arranged evening
classes, where they learnt languages and useful information about hobbies like gardening and taking
photos. Paul's parents laughed when they heard that
their daughter-in-law was worried. Don't worry about
us, they said. We'll manage and you're still only a

It was only when the plane tickets arrived for their flight
to Tokyo that Laura suddenly realized what a big step
this was. She had been looking forward to moving to
a new job in a new country, but now she was not sure
if she had made the right decision. She talked to Paul
about it and he advised her to find out as much as she
could about the country in the few weeks before their
departure. One evening he invited some Japanese
friends from the office to dinner. Although he had told
Laura in advance, she was a little nervous about
meeting so many new people from a country she had
only read about. Would they like the food she was
going to serve? And weren't there a lot of customs the
Japanese had, which they considered very important,
such as the way of greeting people? What would
happen if she did something the Japanese considered
not very polite? She began to wish that Paul had not
invited them. However, her worries were unnecessary.
When their guests arrived, they acted just like their
European guests, except that they were more polite.
For the first time, Laura began to relax and enjoy the
conversation about her new home.
