Exercise:

We give the following equation: S2O82-(aq) + Hg22+(aq)

1.
2.
3.
4.

2SO42-(aq) + 2Hg2+(aq)

What is the name of the element which symbol is Hg.

Identity the two RedOx couples involved in this RedOx reaction.
Write the half equations corresponding to these couples.
Determine what are, respectively, the oxidant and the reductant in the
studied transformation.

Correction:
1. The element which has as a symbol Hg is mercury (once called Hydrargyre or
quicksilver
2. The involved couples in the reaction are:
S2O82-(aq) / SO42- (aq) and Hg2+ (aq) / Hg22+(aq)
3. The half RedOx equations are:
S2O8 2- (aq) + 2e2SO4 2- (aq)
2Hg2+ (aq) + 2eHg2 2+ (aq)
4. The chemical equation for the studied reaction is obtained by summing
member by member the two redox half equations after reversing the
direction of the second one.

S2O82-(aq) + 2e2SO42-(aq)
Hg2 2+(aq)
2Hg2+(aq) + 2e

S2O8 2- (aq) + Hg2 2+

(aq)

2SO4 2- (aq) + 2Hg2+

(aq)

The oxidant is the species that captures electrons. It is therefore of the ion
S2O82-(aq) . The gearbox is the species that gives electrons. These ion Hg 22+(aq).
Exercise:
The bleach, commonly used disinfectant, is manufactured by the action of
chlorine gas on a sodium hydroxide solution.
1. This RedOx reaction involve two couples given below.
ClO-(aq) / Cl2(g) et Cl2(g) / Cl-(aq)
Write the half RedOx equations corresponding to these couples.
2. From these two half RedOx equations, give the chemical equation with only Cl 2
and H2O as reactants.
3. Write the equation of the acid-base reaction between the ions and oxonium
ions hydroxide.

4. Combining the last two equations, write the chemical equation for synthesis
bleach.
Correction:
1. The half RedOx equations are:
2ClO- (aq) + 4H+ (aq) + 2e- Cl2(g) + 2H2O
Cl2(g) + 2e- 2Cl- (aq)
2. Summing member by member the inverse of the first half and equation of the
second and after simplifying 2 we have:
Cl2(g) + 2H2O
2ClO- (aq) + 4H+ (aq) + 2e
+Cl2(g) + 2e- 2Cl- (aq)
=Cl2(g) + H2O
ClO- (aq) + Cl- (aq) + 2H+ (aq)
3. The acid-base reaction between the oxonium ions and hydroxide ions is
written :
2H+ (aq) + 2HO- (aq)
2H2O
4. By summing member by member the last two equations and after
simplification of H + and H2O we have:
Cl2(g) + H2O ClO- (aq) + Cl-(aq) + 2H+(aq)
+2H+(aq) + 2HO-(aq) 2H2O
=Cl2(g) + 2HO- (aq)
ClO-(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H2O
