Dear Parents of 6th and 11th graders,
This letter is to inform you of a change to New York State Public Health Law,
section 2164, signed by Governor Cuomo on October 26, 2015.
This change requires children entering or attending 7th and 12th grade on or
after September 1, 2016 to receive an adequate dose or doses of vaccine against
meningococcal disease.
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious disease which can lead to death within
hours. Survivors may be left with severe disabilities, including the loss of
limbs, cognitive deficits, paralysis, deafness, or seizures.
In the coming months, the New York State Department of Health will draft
regulations and establish updated immunization requirements charts and other
materials to help implement this new requirement.
In the meantime, we encourage you to consult with your childs health care
provider regarding his/her immunization status. Please forward documentation
of any meningococcal vaccines to your childs school nurse as soon as possible
so that we may update his/her health record.
We will advise you as we receive further information regarding the specifics in
how we are to implement this new requirement.
Sincerely,
Jacquelyn A. ODonnell , RN
