ELA 7
Period 1
8:10-8:55 45 Minutes
Objective: I will analyze the elements of a novel by making inferences and analyzing the
theme.
Warm up: What can be a theme for Crispin?
Theme: the moral or lessons of the story "leave well enough alone."
Lesson plan were completed in advance and listed the NVACS standards, lesson
introduction, concept and skill development, practice activity and closure.
Ms. Rodriguez modeled the book cover project and should the students visually how to
complete the task. The students were told they were to work on the paragraph
character transformation assignment if they finished early.
The cover assignment required the students to select a symbol the illustrates the theme
of the story and then they wrote a brief summary of why the selected the symbol. The
students were told that they cannot copy the existing cover.
This Crispin novel final project was presented to the students in three parts; the first
consisted of a bubble map to describe the main character, a plot structure chart
identifying the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution of the
book. A paragraph explaining the main conflict that affected the main characters in
addition the cover sheet symbol portion and character transformation paragraphs
completed part one of the three part assignment.
The second and third part of the project allowed students choice and required them to
review plot structure, recall definitions, identify stages of the plot, analyze the and
extend their thinking to create a poster representing the theme of the novel.
Every student worked on the assignment and Ms. Rodriguez monitored their progress.
She assisted students having trouble analyzing the elements of the story. She told one
student "come up with five things that happened to Crispin, now use those things to
describe him."
The class worked on the assignment and used colored marker scissors and glue sticks
to illustrate the covers they created.

When there was five minutes left in first period, the first half of the ELA block, Ms.
Rodriguez reminded the class that they would be moving on to the writing assignment
next period. The character transformation paragraphs would be the focus of the next
task at hand.
