Forest Time
Learning Intention: Students will choose leaves that represent each
one of their family members and identify their reasoning for their
choices
Layout of lesson: We will walk down to the forest area, whether it is
past the bridge or in the main area it does not matter. Teacher does
safety check. Students then follow and sit in a circle. Mind up with
bell. Teacher reads book. Same Same, but different We discuss
how each of our family members are different-*introduce the term
trait* personality, looks, their likes and dislikes, etc. Teacher shows
own family of leaves that represents her family and explains why
she chose each leaf. Students are given ~7 minutes to find leaves
that represent each member of their family. We will then return to
circle after teacher whistles twice, divide students into groups with
other teachers and they will then all share out their reasons for each
leaf. Teachers are formatively assessing whether or not students
understand the term trait, and correcting as they go. Return to
classroom.
Snack Time
Students will finish their snacks and we will also finish the morning
routine.

CURRICULAR COMPETENCIES: Begin to use language to identify,
create, and express ideas, feelings, opinions, and preferences
STUDENT LANGUAGE: I can identify traits of my family members in
the leaves I chose from the forest and make a picture with writing.
Layout of lesson: Students will continue with their family of leaves
and glue them into their writing books. (Teacher will have a bag of
dry extra leaves just in case students need to switch their leaves
out or extras) Students will brainstorm words to describe their
leaves/family members (ie. Happy, (so I chose a bright leaf), tall, (so
I chose a long leaf), Silly, (so I choose a funny looking leaf), Loving,
(so I chose a leaf that curls), etc.) while teacher writes them on
chart paper.
Expectations/ Criteria:
Ks - Will label the leaves with the names of their family members,
and will be expected to orally say why each leaf represents each
member. Teachers will either write it in with yellow highlighter, or
the small white boards will be used and teachers will write the traits
the students are saying so that they can copy themselves.
(individual basis)
Grade Ones- Will be able to label each family member and a trait
for each member. They may use the chart paper, and teacher will
add to the chart paper as needed.
