INTRODUCTION 4 Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd is assigned as the consultant for Kochi Metro ‘Project by KMRI. The preliminary zeconnaissance and survey forthe project was done {in the year 2012. On 10% June 2015 in order to confirm the soil condition to execute the {foundation for the station building a confirmatory bore hole was done on the entry /exit structure on left hand side of CUSATT station location in Kalamassery. The borchole was ‘done 250m away from a vertical cut of 1200m depth, . The work of geotechnical investigation for the proposed Project, Metro Rail was ‘entrusted to M/s Engineers Diagnostic Centre (P) Ltd, Cochin, The field works for the geotechnical investigation were caried out in the month of June 2015 «The scope of work for this investigation included performing drilling and sampling of one borehole, conducting geotechnical field and laboratory testing, resin this report. The primary purpose of these activities was to collect {information atthe ste for subsequent preparation of geotechnical recommen the design of foundations for the proposed station location of Kochi Metro 4. The results of various tests conducted to determine the physical and engineering, ‘Properties of sil samples collected from the bore hole is also appended inthe report. © The samples retrieved were sealed at both ends to prevent any loss of water. 2. GENERAL GEOLOGICAL INFORMATIONS INTRODUCTION Geology of physiographic region of Ernakulam district has its bearing and influence on the proposed Kochi Metro Rail Project. These physiographic region is the midlands ‘towards the east. The eastern midland consist of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which are categorized as “Hard rocks” in geotechnical parlance. GEOLOGY ‘The Tertiary and the basement rocks are subjected to intense latertization resulting in the preponderance of latrites in the midland region. GEOHYDROLOGY ites are potential aquifers during the rainy seasons, but they do not have groundwater retention capacity during the summer. Groundwater occurs in the ‘weathered, partly weathered, fractured and jointed basement rocks. Bore wells dug, in the potential fracture zones give high yields.
