What is Imperialism?
Imperialism:
One country dominates another countrys political,
cultural, and/or economic life.

Advantages to the Europeans
Colonizing countries allowed Europeans to obtain
natural resources:
Rubber, Petroleum, Ivory, Slaves

Naval Trade ports and Bases could be set up


Further Strengthening the colonizing countries

Africans and European Imperialism


A Noble undertaking
Europeans believed themselves to be economically,
technologically, and politically more advanced
than the African countries they were colonizing
Advancements such as these are what gave
the British an easy time taking over the lesser
developed African countries
Colonized countries did further advance their
economic, politic, and technological
goals

Negatives of Imperialism
Population of countries were significantly reduced due
to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (not ending until
the 1800s) and the horrid conditions put upon
imperialized countries
People often abused, oppressed, lack of human rights

Costs to the people of Africa

Work in horrid conditions
Separation of Families through Slave Trade
Loss of Resources
Loss of Independence
