    Hypokalemia is most commonly caused by excessive potassium loss from the gastrointestinal tract or kidneys rather than poor dietary intake. Potassium loss can occur via vomiting, diarrhea, ileostomies, colon polyps, or laxative use from the GI tract, or through the use of diuretic medications, elevated corticosteroid or aldosterone levels, renal tubular acidosis, or low magnesium levels from the kidneys. Some medications like aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, and high-dose prednisone can also cause low potassium through their side effects.
