Rizals Visit to the United States (1888)

ARRIVAL IN SAN FRANCISCO


April 28, 1888 (Saturday Morning) when Rizal first saw the
America
Belgic ship
All passengers were not allowed to land
American health authorities placed the ship under quarantine
Reason: the ship (Belgic) was from the far-east where a cholera
was alleged to be ranging
True Reason: Political Issues

After a week of quarantine, all first-class passengers,


including Rizal, were permitted to land

May 4, 1888 Rizal registered at Palace Hotel
He stayed in San Francisco for two days (May 4 May 6, 1888)
At that time, Grover Cleveland was the President of the United
States

ACROSS THE AMERICAN CONTINENT


May 6, 1888 at 4:30pm Rizal left San Francisco for
Oakland.
In Oakland, he boarded to train for his trip across the
continent
May 7, 1888 Rizal had his breakfast at Reno, Nevada

RIZAL IN NEW YORK


May 13, 1888 at Sunday Morning Rizal reached New
York
Rizal left New York on May 16, 1888 for the City of
Rome
Liverpool ship
According to him, the Liverpool was the second largest
ship in the world

RIZALS IMPRESSION OF AMERICA


Rizal had good and bad impressions of the United States
Good impressions:
1. The material progress of the country as shown in the
great cities, huge farms, flourishing industries, and busy
factories
2. The drive and energy of the American People
3. The natural beauty of the land
4. The high standards of living
5. The opportunities for better life offered to poor
immigrants

Bad impressions:
1. Lack of racial equality
