Interview (1)

Interviewer: What is your name and age?

Gavin Man: Gavin and I’m 18

Interviewer: Ok, What kind of music do you listen to and why do you listen to it?

Gavin Man: I listen to a lot of rap and hip-hop, like Kanye, Eminem, 50 and all those type of
people. Umm, I listen to them because they all have skill and talent; their lyrics are just ‘mad’
and the beats they produce are proper like in your face and you can proper relate to what they
say and how the music makes you feel.

Interviewer: Cool, Do you like to watch their music videos? If so, what do you like
about them?

Gavin Man: Yeah man, ‘coz then you can really see what they’re saying and how they feel
about it. I think that’s like the main things video’s should do is like elaborate on what the song
itself is trying to say. Like in Eminem’s song ‘Stan’, he uses like a lot of dark scenery and stuff
‘coz his lyrics and his track is dark init. And like also it like helps understand the song better like
if there’s a drop the video emphasises that and stuff.

Interviewer: Yeah ok, So would you say this applies to all kinds of music, say like rock or heavy
metal?

Gavin Man: Well I don’t really listen to that kind of music, but yeah I think it’s still the same.
Like I’ve heard a few tracks like Linkin Park and that. I love the way the video for their song,
what’s it… the one with them in a church… I don’t know, just the video like isolates them in the
church like showing they’re on their own and when the guitars kick in like it shakes and there’s
‘bare’ different shots. It all just goes proper crazy, which is cool but like I said it ain’t my kind of
music.

Interviewer: Fair enough, do you like to buy CD’s or prefer to download?

Gavin Man: It depends really. For the artists that I really like and listen to I buy their albums
‘coz like I want to support them obviously and because you get like bonus tracks and art work
and there’s that little book with the lyrics and stuff. But like tracks that I just want to jam to I
download because, well, just because I can really.
Interviewer: So you say you like the bonus features, does this mean you like to purchase your
favourite artist’s digi-paks?

Gavin Man: Yeah I got quite a lot actually. I think digi-paks are well good ‘coz like you get so
many things with it. You see live videos and some come with freebees, posters, un-heard tracks
and all sorts. They have the music video as well, my sister’s into like your rock and metal, but
their digi-paks are pretty good as well last time she got this ‘sick’ poster for some band and it
didn’t even cost that much.

Interviewer: Sound’s good, coming back to videos, are there any styles of videos that you like
to see?

Gavin Man: Yeah like I mentioned before about Eminem’s ‘Stan’ video, like it’s got a proper in
depth narrative that’s shot and like they’re acting out the lyrics. Especially the parts where you
see Dido just sitting on the corridor floor like really upset and singing the chorus. But also I
don’t like JUST there being a story line, you know what I mean, like obviously as I already said I
like the performer singing their lyrics so we can like interpret our own meanings from the
narrative but also the artist’s meaning from his emotions.

Interviewer: So you do have a preference of what kind of music video it is? For example if it
breaks conventions or sticks to them, or do like happy or dark videos?

Gavin Man: To be honest like it’s a little exciting to like break conventions of a genre and play
around with people’s minds and stuff but I don’t personally see a point in it. I think it just takes
away the meaning of the song because it gives you a different image on purpose if you know
what mean. It doesn’t really support the lyrics or song so it doesn’t give you the full meaning
and messes with what you interpret from the song itself. If it sticks to the emotion of the song
then it gives you the chance to really feel what the music is trying to say. I don’t really have a
happy or dark preference either so long as it works with the video I’m cool.

Interview: Alright man, Thank you for your time.

Gavin Man: No problem man.
