Parang versus bullet: Man shot by bodyguard while trying to attack Datuk

KUALA LUMPUR: A man learnt the hard way that a parang is no match for a
bullet when he was shot while trying to attack a businessman in Cheras,
today. The man and his accomplice, both wielding parang, had targeted
the businessman, a Datuk who was having his breakfast at a stall along
Jalan Chan Sow Lin at 9.30am. The businessman was at the time
accompanied by his friend, a bodyguard, and a driver. One of the men had
slashed the businessmans friend on his back and face. Upon seeing the
commotion, the bodyguard pulled out his weapon and opened fire on one
of the suspects. The other suspect escaped via a pickup truck. It was
learnt that the Datuk operated a scrap metal business. The stall owner,
50-year-old Wong Chun Hui said she was with her husband, their 17-yearold nephew and stall workers at the time of the incident. The men had
tried to slash the Datuk but hit the victims friend instead. About seven or
eight shots were fired. One of the bullets grazed my nephew on his lower
back," she said, adding that her nephew was serving drinks to the table
when the incident happened. The customers at the stall all fled when the
incident broke out. Wongs husband, Lau Song Yen, 60, was visibly shaken
when met at the scene. He said they immediately called a relative to send
his injured nephew to the University Malaya Medical Centre. We have
been running our business here for the last 10 years. This is the first time
something like this happened, he said. Cheras police chief Assistant
Commissioner Chong Kok Sin, confirming the incident, said another injured
victim also rushed to a private hospital in Bangsar while the injured
suspect was sent to the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Polices
forensic team seized two 10-inch parang, seven bullet shells, a slug and a
T-shirt from the scene.
