SHIN GUARD,
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
“The preseat invention relates generally to leg protection
More specifically, the invention relates toa shin gard, pare
ticularly for use by wearer involved in combat sport.
BACKGROUND
Shin guards are worn in variety of sports to protect the
lower legs of the wearer during competition and training. Itis
important dat shin guards offer proper protection, while stil
being comfortable and lightweight without restricting the
mobility ofthe wearer. The most commonly knovn type of
shin guard consists of a resilient material, such as foam,
strappedto the lowerlegs. This basi shin guards lightweight
and does not unduly restrict the mobility of the wearer. How
‘ever, most commonly known shin guards are not concerned.
with protecting the opponent.
‘While the primary purpose of shin guards i to protect the
wearer from accidental blows or impacts during sports, suck

such combat sportsblows or impacts are more common duet
the nature ofthe activity particularly since kicking the oppo-
rents legs may bellowed, or intentional, and the shin may be
used for striking and blocking. Purhermor, in such combat
spor itisalso desirable to provide protection tothe instep of
the wearer as the instep may be use for striking.
‘ere are various means known for securing shin guards 0

be placed beneath a sock or within @ pocket in a sack. For
‘ther shin guards resilient straps may be used that ar ether

‘ever, these rigid shin guards are not well-suited for combat
sports, There is a nocd for shin guards that are sited for
‘combat sports and overcome the problems of the shin guards
‘designed for ather sports
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly. there is a need fora shin guard for we in
‘combat sports that, while providing the requisite protection
and mobility tothe wearer, also provides for reduced initation
to both the wearer and the opponent(s).
Inparicul, the shin guard has a front padding attached to
‘asleevealong most ofits length, except foratop portion ofthe
front padding adjacent the wearer's knee that is reversibly
attachable. closure system atthe top of the sleeve, which
sccures the shin guard 1o the leg of the wearer, is hidden
beneath the top portion ofthe front padding. When the front
padding is secured, the closure system is hidden and is
Unlikely to catch on clothing or eause ita
‘In an embodiment ofthe present invention, there is pro>
vided a shin guard comprised of a sleeve and having a top
Portion, a bottom portion, a front portion, and aback portion,
the front and back portions each having atop portion and
bottom portion. There is front padding attached to the front of
the sleeve along its length fom the instep up toward the top.
‘except fora top portion of the front poding adjacent to the
knee. The unattached portion of paddingis reversibly secured

sleeve The shin guard also has foot oop for maintaining the
position ofthe shin guard
Tn another aspect, the sleeve is an clastic material or 3
neoprene materia
‘Ina further aspect, the shin guard also has a calf reinforee=
sent affixed to the back portion ofthe sleeve. As a further
‘option, the calf reinforcement is cros-shaped. The calf rin-
orcement may be made of a material less clastic than the
sleeve material
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OP THE DRAWINGS.
Embodiments will now be described, by way of example
only, with reference to the attached Figures, wherein:

region of the front padding secured in accordance with an
‘embodiment of the present invention
PIG. 2 shows the shin guard shown in FIG. 1 with the
system and top rexion ofthe front padding both open.
FIG. 3 shows the shin guard showa in FIGS, 1 and 2 with
the closure system tightened and secured withthe top region
‘of the font padding open.
FIG, 4shows theshin guard shown in FIGS.1,2,and3 with
the closure system tightened, secured, and hidden behind the
secured front padding; and
FIG, § shows a shin guard having an optional eal rein-
forcement secording to further embodiment of the present
FIG. 6 shows shin guant wherein the foot loop comprises
plurality of loops for securing the shin guard to the wearer

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
‘The present invention provides shin guard having hid
dn closure system that reduces the likelihood of the closure
catching on clothing and causing initation, The preferred
embodiment will now be described with reference to the
figures wherein like elements are identified by ike numbers
‘A shin guard in accordance with the present invention will
‘now be deseribod in detail with reference tothe figutes. The
shin guard 10s shown in FIG. Yon the leg Sof the wearer ia
‘an unsecured configuration, The sleeve 11 has atop portion
near theknee of the Weare, bottom portion near the ankle of
the wearer. The sleeve 11 also has front sleve portion (not
clearly shown of FIG. 1 because of the front padding 18)
extending along the length ofthe sleeve from the top sleeve
portion to the bottom sleeve portion. The font sleeve portion

aspect, the sleeve 11 is form iting and elastic. Any suitable
‘material or fabric may be used 10 construct the sleeve I;
however, a neoprene material is puaticularly prefered. In
some aspects, the sleeve 11 is fabricated as a composite of
erent materialsbut is preferably made froma single mate-

“The front padding 15 also has top region 1Se covering a tp
Portion of the shin and unlike the instep region 15a and the
Instep region 185, may be selectively and adjustaly attached
to the sleeve 11 by a fastening system,
It should be mentioned that the foat padding may’ be
partially of fully removable from the sleve. In other words,
the top region 1Se may be pulled away from the sleeve 11
‘The festening system may be any suitablesystem for seloo-
tively and reversibly attaching the tp region 18 of the front
padding 15. The preferred fastening system ishook-and-loop,
such as a VeleroR system, with complementary book-and=
Joop surfaces on the inside ofthe top region 18c ofthe front
padding 18 and the front top portion of sleeve 11. The front
padding 15 may be coastructed of any suitable materials oF

synthetic and real lather materials that enclose a impact
absorbing material
“The shin guard has aclosure system 17 (that showin
san unsecured state in FIG. 1) atthe top of sleeve 1 for
selectively and adjustably tightening and securing the shin
guard 10 on the eg ofthe wearer. The closure system may be
‘ny’ suitable system for selectively and adjustably tightening
‘and securing the shin guard 10 on the leg of the wearer.
preferred closure system is a stap configured to tighten the
sleeve witen the strap is pulled and baving hook-and-loop
surfaces complementary’ to. the hook-and-loop surfaces
alixed tothe front padding Scand the front top portion of the
sleeve 11 andthe top region 18e ofthe foot aiding 18. In
such a configuration, when the closure system 17 is engaged
to tighten and secure the shin guard 10 on the leg of the
wearer, and when the front padding 18¢ is secured 10 the
sleeve 11, the closure system 17s fully enclosed between the
front padding 18e and the sleeve 11, thereby preventing the
‘closure system from catching on clothing, from causing skin
irritation or damage, or from becoming unsecured during use
(oot shown in FIG. 1.
“The shin guard 10 aso has atleast one Foot loop 18 (not
{lly shown in FIG. 1) atached to, or extending from, the
bottom of the sleeve 11, The foot loop 18 partially wraps
‘around the foot ofthe wearer to help maintain the postion of
shin guard 10 during use, primarily to prevent the shin guard
10 rom rising up. The fot loop 18 ix preferably positioned to
‘weap around the arch ofthe fo ofthe wearer. The foot loop
18 may be made of ny suitable material or may be made of
the same material asthe sleeve 11
