ED 651 MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS

Time: 3hours

Maximum Marks: 100

Answer ALL the questions.

1. Consider the translational vibrations of a small rigid lathe along the cutting
direction. A model of this system has a stiffness element k = 20 * 106 N/m, an inertia
element m =22.5 kg, and a damping coefficient c =21205 N-s /m. Determine the free
response of this system for a 5 mm initial displacement and zero initial velocity.
How does the nature of the response of the system change when the damping
coefficient is increased to 43000

N-s /m.

b. Determine the steady state displacement x(t) of the 6 kg mass if Y=28 mm and
=20 rad/s.(12 marks)

2. A bundle of wet clothes forms a mass of 10 kg (m b) in the machine and causes a

rotating unbalance. The rotating mass is 20 kg (including mb) and the diameter of the
rotating washer basket is 50 cm. Assume that the spin cycle rotates at 300 rpm. Let k
be 1000 N/m and = 0.01. Discuss the assumptions made in your analysis in view of
what you might know about washing machines. Design the isolation system (i.e.,
decide on which value of k and c to use) so that the force transmitted to the ground
is less than 100N.(12 Marks)

b. Obtain the response for the model

x 4 x 85 x y 3 y if

y(t) is a unit step

function and the initial conditions are zero.

3. a. One of the wheels and leaf springs of an automobile, traveling over a rough road
is shown in figure. For simplicity, all the wheels can be assumed to be identical and
the system can be idealized as shown in figure. The automobile has a mass of m 1 =
1000 kg and the leaf springs have a total stiffness of k 1 = 400 kN/m. The wheels and
axles have a mass of m2 = 300 kg and the tires have a stiffness of k 2 = 500 kN/m. If
the road surface varies sinusoidally with an amplitude of Y=0.1m and a period of
L=6 m, find the critical velocities of the automobile.

Figure consists of a beam, considered massless, with constant EI, free to bend
vertically, with two concentrated masses, m1 and m2, located as shown. Numerical
values are L = 4m; EI = 2 * 10 6N/m2; m1= 10 kg; m2 = 8kg and the flexibility matrix
is given as
