The Shy Girl
The shy girl, Brooklyn, with freckles that dot her cheeks and short brown hair that
sits on her shoulders, sits, hunching over her desk with ideas drowning her from the
outside world. The sound of the drumming bell hoists her from her schoolwork, so she
can pack up and leave. She scurries out the door, last again, and watches as everyone runs
through the gate like a herd of wild deer away from a predator, stomping down anything
that appears in their way.
Outside the gate, Brooklyn stands like a fish out of water with her two best friends
and their boyfriends. Overwhelmed, she pops her headphones into her ears and plays
music loudly, making people nearby believe a drum is beating far away. Brooklyn follows
the four, who are in a trance of nothing else existing but them.
Brooklyn, herself, spins around in a trance of only herself. As she gambols down
the pavement, to the beat of her music, Brooklyns hair flies weightlessly with the wind
around her. Brooklyns motions shout out to the people around her, but her voice is
hushed like a sleeping city.
