That is, the heat pump delivers 2.5 KW of energy to the house by consuming only 1 KW of electricity. Is this a violation of the first law of thermodynamics? Why? (5 marks] b) A steam power plant receives 500 MW of heat from a furnace at a temperature of 500°C while transferring waste heat to the sea water through a condenser. Determine the temperature of the sea water for the plant to generate maximum work output of 200 MW. [6 marks} ‘Question 3 An insulated rigid tank is initially evacuated (vacuum). The tank is then connected to a constant supply pipeline at 100 kPa and 21°C and air flows in until the pressure of the tank has reached 100 kPa when the connection is closed. The specific heats of the air are assumed as C, = 0.718 kivkg.K and C, = 1.005 ki/kg.K. Neglect kinetic and potential energy effects, determine the final temperature of the tank in °C.
