BASIS OF DESIGN
DUTY OF THE PLANT
The Nitrogen unit consists of a gaseous and liquid nitrogen generation unit with associated
liquid nitrogen storage and vaporization facilities.
‘The unit is a package designed to provide the following:
+ Gaseous nitrogen (GAN) to process users in normal operation
+ Liquid nitrogen (LIN) sent to cryogenic liquid storage
+ Liquid vaporization to meet peak loads and start-up/shutdown demands.
‘The unit is made of the following elements:
Cryogenic Nitrogen Generator Unit (A-3603)
Nitrogen is generated by cryogenic air separation to a purity of 99.7% by volume.
The cryogenic separation unit has a single, multistage centrifugal type compressor (a spare
rotor is also provided and kept in warehouse) with inter plus after-coolers. Regenerative,
molecular sieve towers (two in parallel) are included for the removal of carbon dioxide and
moisture.
Nitrogen Generation Unit is designed to provide both liquid and gaseous products
simultaneously.
The nitrogen generation design capacity is as follows:
Nm®fh (atm / °C)
Liquid Nitrogen 647
Gaseous Nitrogen 367
Total 994
The ratio of liquid to gaseous nitrogen production is variable up to the maximum liquid
production rates indicated above.
The LIN production rate will allow storage vessels to be fl
led in 10 days approximately.
Liquid Storage and Vaporization
Air separation unit liquid nitrogen product is sent to the Plant Liquid Nitrogen Storage Vessels,
\V-3601A/B (2 x 50% capacity) and the CCR Regeneration Liquid Nitrogen Storage Vessels,
V-3602A/B/C (3 x 33% capacity). From each pair of storage vessels, liquid nitrogen is sent,
when required, to ambient air vaporizers A-3601-E-01 and A-3602-E-02.
To prevent the possibility of cross contamination from refinery process sources, CCR
Regeneration nitrogen is provided as a separate dedicated system. Vaporized gaseous CCR
Regeneration nitrogen operates at a higher pressure than the Plant nitrogen header.
Plant Li Storage, AB
Vaporized plant liquid nitrogen is normally not required in normal refinery operation, liquid
storage provides a butfer capacity for emergency and high consumption operations such as
start-up, shutdown, peak nitrogen blanketed tank in-breathing and maintenance.
Nitrogen storage vessels, V-3601AVB, are each sized to hold 53 m? minimum liquid nitrogen.
This ensures storage capacity for 4 days of operation approximately, based on normal demand
plus one CCR unit shutdown and re-start-up.12

‘These storage vessels are provided with hose connections for liquid nitrogen to be both
imported and exported by road tanker.
Pl Nitrogen Vaporization, 1
Vaporization of liquid nitrogen is achieved by heat exchange with ambient air in vaporizer
‘A-3601-E-01
‘The design requirements for vaporized plant nitrogen are as follows:
N*M (tatm /0°C)
‘Short duration peak for max tank in-breathing (20 minutes) 12,000
Long duration for plant start-up (12 hours) 41,500
Supply of gaseous nitrogen to the refinery is ensured with a pressure control valve on the
vaporizer outlet line. The vaporizer is designed to supply gaseous nitrogen at a minimum
pressure of 7.5 kg/omég downstream of pressure control valve on a continuous basis.
CCR Regeneration Liquid Nitrogen Storage, V-3602//B/C_
Nitrogen storage vessels, V-3602A/BIC, are each sized to hold 40 m? minimum liquid nitrogen.
This ensures storage capacity for 2 CCR regeneration cycles (2x48 hours) when demand is at
peak.
These storage vessels are provided with suitable hose connections for liquid nitrogen to be
both imported and exported by road tanker.
Regens Jguid Nitrogen Vapori \-9602-E-01
\Vaporization of liquid nitrogen shall be achieved by heat exchange with ambient air in vaporizer
‘A-3602-E-01.
‘The normal requirement for vaporized CCR nitrogen is 95.1 NmY%n, Each month, a peak
requirement of 800 Nm*h is required for a two day period,
The design requirements for vaporized plant nitrogen are as follows:
Nm*ih (tatm / 0°C)
Peak for 2 days/month (48 hours) 955
Continuous vaporization (20 days) 95
‘The supply of gaseous nitrogen to the refinery shall is controlled with a pressure control valve
on the vaporizer outlet line. The vaporizer is designed to supply gaseous nitrogen at a minimum
Pressure of 8.7 kg/emég down stream of pressure control valve at vaporizer outiet on a
Continuous basis.
This pressure is higher than the Plant Nitrogen supply pressure to avoid the possi
flow contamination of this nitrogen network.
FEED CHARACTERISTICS
The air taken into compressors is a standard atmospheric air with the following design
characteristics:
Maximum temperature 36°C
Minimum temperature 16°C

DESIGN FEATURE
Actual LIN to GAN ratio
‘The plant is actually capable of producing GAN and LIN in the ranges given below:
Max LIN mode Max GAN mode
Liquid Nitrogen (Nm) 679 158
Gaseous Nitrogen (Nm®/h) 347 1611
Total (Nm*in) 1026 1769
LIN to GAN Ratio 1:05 1:10
Operation with back-up Air
In the event of A-3603 compressor failure (A-3603-C-01), wet air can be sourced from Unit 35,
Air Compressors A-3501A/B/C discharge. The air system spare compressor will be dedicated
to this service.
Wet air from A-3501A/B/C is available at 8.5 kg/em*g 100% water saturated at 41°C. Wet ait
will be introduced at the inlet of the Main Air Compressor after cooler A-3603-E-06 within A-
3603.
Due to the lower air supply pressure, Refinery Nitrogen production pressure will be reduced to
7.0 kg/em’g,
In order to maintain the CCR nitrogen pressure to the minimum of 8.0 kg/cm*g, a LIN transfer
Pump (A-3601-P-01) is provided to batch transfer LIN from V-3601A/B to V-3602A/B/C
Operating at a higher pressure.
‘The expected GAN and LIN production capacities are indicated below:
