Ghost of Christmas Future
Leo Tolstoy once wrote, Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of
changing himself meaning it is much easier to see the faults of others than to see the ones in
ourselves. In Charles Dickens classic novel, A Christmas Carol a greedy miser turns into a more
generous man after he is haunted by three spirits who help him redeem himself into a benevolent
human being. Scrooge begins as a loner who walks along the edges of human existence paying
his clerk a mere 15 shillings a week and changes into a joyous man who knew how to keep
Christmas well as a benefactor to Bob Cratchits struggling family. While all of the ghosts play
a part in Scrooges changed nature, the Ghost of Christmas Future has the greatest influence on
transforming Scrooge from a selfish miser to a generous, kind soul
Scrooge learns lessons from the Ghost of Christmas Past and Present, but it is ultimately
the Ghost of Christmas Future who inspires him to beg for a second chance to live life as a
better man. The Ghost of Christmas Future shows Scrooge his own forgotten grave in the future.
Scrooges death is unmourned, unlike Tiny Tim, who the family misses because of how good he
was. Hear me! I am not the man I was...Why show me this, if I am past all hope! (pg.159-160)
Scrooge begs the spirit for another chance to live his life as a better man in the future. Scrooge
finally realizes that he needs to change himself in order to have a different future and through his
redemption, he helps change the world for many people.
