Culture
Different cultures show different habits, behaviours
and food preferences.
These habits are usually transmitted by
reinforcement and social learning. This can include
the foods we consume but also the way we prepare
and share food.
List some examples of food traditions, habits or
rituals.
Lawrence et al (2007)
Zimbabwean women suggested that the pressure to be
slim that we find in western cultures was not a factor in
their own country.
They also reported that, although they were aware that
healthy foods were preferable. They didnt always
practice this and ate foods they enjoyed.
These findings suggest that food preference is influenced
by culture, time, availability, cost and health
considerations.
Lawrence et al (2007)
Studied different cultures and explored the reasons
for their food preference and habits.
Evidence that Pakistani and Bangladeshi women
reported having learnt to cook and prepare food
from their mothers (indicates a strong cultural
influence).
They said they took pride in traditional cooking
methods but that they admitted enjoying western
(fast) foods..

influences.
Globalisation
The world has changed enormously in the last 20-30
years and has become a smaller, more
interconnected place.
This is due to the internet and lower cost of
international travel.
This means that the availability of food from other
cultures is huge and has reduced the influence of
any one individual culture on food preference.
