Definition: Synonyms belongs to Lexical cohesion, it is used either

synonyms or near synonyms, in subsequent sentences. (Syal & D.V.Jindal,

2007, p. 136)
Example 1: I kept turning, my rigid index finger extended, to catch his

corpulent colleague just behind the jawbone with this deadly digit. (Salkie,
1995, p. 10)
Example 2: In the third year you can develop these special interests in

particular areas of the subject, and it is here that the

breadth of the departments expertise is especially an
advantage: we offer courses in a very wide range of
specialist options, including computational linguistics and
sociolinguistics. (Salkie, 1995, p. 10)

Example 3: everybody runs in fear, abject to authority. And everybody

who has any hope at all aims for the top floor where the
chairman lives. He lives always at the top of high buildings, or
in fortresses on islands in warm water. . . .
And it is very scary to be in such a position, so you have
to keep securing it. . . . Power held and loved and cherished
in the hands for no other end than itself, yes. Oh, eventually it
dies, of course. It goes round and round, eating everything in

sight. So, bloated and gutted, it topples over, unable to control

its own swollen body (Salkie, 1995, p. 11)
