Manufacturing has a central role to play in the global economy as a driver of

productivity, growth and technological change. It is a key input to economies and
fulfil a range of final and intermediate demands.
Globalisation has undoubtedly boost the economic levels and a better standard of
living across the world and Mauritius is of no exception. Manufacturers today cater
for mass production and manufacturing techniques such as: Just in Time, Six Sigma
and Lean Manufacturing.

Low-carbon economy is a concept that refers to an economy which has a minimal
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the biosphere together targeting at a
competitive and efficient manufacturing industry.
Manufacturers face unwanted and undesirable setback in its day to day operations.
To deal with these setbacks, it is vital that the organisation implement appropriate
risk management process.
The manufacturing industry need new strategies to help and retain new emerging
talents, high-skilled workers.

The company is reputed for the design, manufacture and repair of new and existing
tanks. It has recently completed a 5000 m3 heavy fuel oil tank (HFO) for CEB.
The tank was design according to API 650 standard and the parts were premanufactured and errected during a period of 6 months.In line with that, the
company is a specialist in the field of corrosion protection. Recently, the company
has installed a cathodic protection for the errected HFO tank.

During the inspection process, if a part product does not match the customer
specification, it is discarded and a new one has to be manufactured. Therefore there
is a wastage of man hours and material. In line with that, this has a cumulative
impact over the year and at times the company is not able to meet deadlines which
results into customer satisfaction. At times additional man hours are required on
that specific job which is an additional cost.

Variation is the main enemy The six sigma methodology aim at reducing
the variation in business processes. DMAIC resolves issues of defects and
failures, deviation from a target, excess cost or time and deterioration.
