Meiosis Notes Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Teacher:Julie Koshy

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Jan. 22, 2016

Standard:
S4.PO 1. Describe the role of energy in cellular growth, development, and repair.
S4.PO 5. Describe the purposes and processes of cellular reproduction.
Objective (SWBAT):
Describe each stage of meiosis.
Describe the similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
List the stages of meiosis in order.
State the haploid or diploid state of a cell during each stage of meiosis.
Describe the indicators of each stage of mitosis.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding):
Students will create a diagram that indicates each stage of meiosis with the number of
chromosomes and if the cell is quadrupliod, diploid, and haploid.
Key vocabulary: prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I,
telophase I, prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II,
telophase II, and cytokinesis

Materials: PowerPoint, animations, students

lab notebooks, and writing utensil

Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
Ask students Who will summarize what the objective of the lab yesterday was? Create a haploid cell.
How did you do it? We had to separate the homologous chromosomes and then the sister chromatids.

Teacher Will:
Play animations, pausing periodically to
explain the animation and ask the students
questions.

Student Will:
Take notes in their lab notebooks.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the slides with the key points left blank for
the students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their
notes.
Student Will:
Take notes based on animation and
answer the teachers questions.

Answer student questions.
Differentiation
Students who have cognitive issues can have access to the animation while completing
the chart.

Closure/Lesson Summary: The production of gametes follows a similar process as mitosis. However,
the main difference is that cells that undergo meiosis need to be haploid in order to fuse with another
gamete to result in the correct number of chromosomes.
